Thanks Ray. I'm beginning to think about poss disk failure. The drive seems to disappear from Windows Explorer whilst files are being re-written to it. Also, I'm not happy about how loud it sometimes sounds when the head is moving about. I know the signs, it happened to me about 6 years ago and that failed completely. I haven't had this long at all, and most of the time it just shuts itself down when not being used. Must be a duff unit. I'll check the Seagate website, and if no joy I think I'll try to return it - we have a 12 month warranty under the Sale of Goods Act, or something like that. I'll have a look at Moneysavingexpert as they know the ins and outs of returning stuff that goes t!ts up. I have just checked and I bought this drive on 3rd June this year. It is a Barracuda Green 2Tb, 5900rpm 64Mb drive. I have just bought a new 2Tb Samsung drive from Amazon for £90 (I'm sure this was £99 yesterday) so I can transfer everything over. I have removed the Seagate one from the HTPC and will put it back to copy files over. There is a firmware upgrade on the Seagate site, but I'll wait until I have copied everything before I try to update the firmware. M
