I wonder if it is the CPU or GPU (maybe the combination) that needs more horsepower to make the HD video smooth?

Another good one is Apple HD Trailers... Which you will need to play with Quicktime outside of Media Portal, but hey it's something else to play with 8)

I can play Quicktime H.264 720p without a problem on my Athlon64 3200, but 1080p stutters just enough to make it annoying. Will try the WMV stuff later... I guess when Nvidia enable hardware H.264 decoding with the 6600GT things will brighten up!

That's pretty much just a 5200 with a faster clock speed.
Your lucky if it will play HDTV at all. Since the CPU takes over a lot of the video playback duties on the 5200/5500 cards a 2400+ might not have enough speed to do everything.

You get full h.264 purevideo acceleration with (very) latest PowerDVD codec. CPU usage is pretty low with it, you'd be amazed. Note that your GPU must support purevideo HD acceleration.

Nice to hear the problems went away... No I don't have any need for logs, I will ask for new ones if the (or other) problem arises again

If anyone wanted to persist trying to use the onboard HD3300, you could increase (overclock) the HT frequency + vga core frequency which can result in better h264 playback (HT frequency is the most important aspect, since you don't have a phenom CPU the HT freq is quite low, so the onbaord gpu can't access the shared RAM fast enough)...
