I am able to play midi files in Windows Media Player and Media Center (MCE) but not in MediaPortal. I added .mid extension to Music Extensions in MediaPortal configuration. I can see the files in MP, but when I try to open them, I get no sound and an error message:

    Unable to play : test.mid
    Audio codec: MIDI

I have the following options for the player settings in Music, General Settings:

Player : Bass engine, Inernal dshow player
Sound Device: Default Sound Device; SoundMAX Digital Audio

I tried all four combinations of Player and Sound Device, but none of them works.

Click on My System on the left for my current system parameters.

    Hi,

MIDI playback is a completely different kettle of fish to say MP3. I am sure that it would involve someone creating a plugin.

Mediaplayer has a way of playing and routing midi files to the chosen midi playback device.

I assume that mediaportal does not. Neither does VLC for that matter. Would WMP work to do it as external player? I haven't tried that for MIDI playback.

I also tried to play .kar files which are in fact midi files flavoured with kakaoke text. I installed the "Karaoke for DirectX" filter from here: SourceForge.net: Karaoke for DirectX: Files, and I can see the video, but there is no audio.

.kar and .mid files are very popular due to their size and I hope to find a way to play them in MP.
