I have created an Application that monitors my front yard via a web cam and is streamed by vlc. When there is movement in the front yard, a broadcast is sent across my network which triggers a client app to pop up for 15 seconds and receive the stream from my web cam (a bit like an advanced door bell). This client app is set to be always on top but when I am watching something in MP, my app flickers for a second and then MP comes back over the top.

I am running the latest versions of MP but i have a sneaking suspicion it may have to do with VRM9.

My app is using the VLC ActiveX plugin to receive the stream.

Any help on this would be appreciated.........

As far as I know, VMR9 is going to keep MP focused as long as video is playing and MP is in fullscreen mode. You could try switching to overlay (which would probably lead to less than perfect video) or disabling VMR9 exclusive. I'm not really sure that either of these would work, but they're worth a shot.

I played a bit more with this and found that in the direct show filters section, if I turned off the VMR9 Exclusive option, I can get things to come over top whilst playing TV,Video, etc. This also includes task manager and even the start bar. Thanks for the help.

OK, this may be stating the obvious but have you tried turning off the option "MP always on top" in the general section of MP config?
I have this turned off and the task manager can show even when DX exclusive is turned on and in fullscreen video.

I have got it working the way I like it. It was the VMR9 exlusive mode option being turned on.....

I realise you have it working now, but you'll probably get better performance with DX9 exclusive mode activated.
With DX9 Exclusive turned off you will probably get a lot of tearing in fast camera moves, ie, when watching a sporting event or similar.

I fixed all that tearing with ffdshow and turned on the deinterlacing section. Used the AFL on ten and the footy on nine as a test. looks pretty good in HD.
