Whenever I am recording tv and watching any video separately, media portal will tend to crash when ever I fast forward or rewind more than 2x. The left-right skip steps typically dont work in my movies, due to the codec I guess. I figure that the hard drive cant handle recording and ff at the same time. The entire computer will typically lock up when doing this requiring a restart.

Yes, that is most likely the cause. What format are the movies that you are trying to skip through - mpg, xvd ... ?

I figure that the hard drive cant handle recording and ff at the same time..

It should handle it easily - I have recorded 2 TV programs at the same time as I have watched a previously recorded program, and there were no issues with skipping or fast-forwarding.

What video decoder are you using?

What other decoders have you tried?

Does this happen on all types of videos, or just some?

Do you have a MediaPortal.log file from one of these instances - that might provide a clue?

It was an hdtv .avi file that looks like it uses divx. I recall a divx auto-updater updating the codec yesterday, but this isn't the first time that its crashed. If I am watching a codec that will allow MP to skip step, then I almost never have this problem when I do ff or rw.

Whatever MP uses by default. I don't ever recall seeing the ability to change the vid decoder in the setup.

Does the log file reset once MP starts back up after a crash? If so, then no; MP started back up when I restarted windows. I'll look for it next time this happens though.

MediaPortal makes a backup copy of the last MediaPortal.log file at each new launch, so if you get into this situation again, you can use the MediaPortal.bak file to see what the cause might have been ....

Are you able to watch those "hdtv.avi files" when not recording, and skip or fast-forward satisfactorily?

I would say that the problem you are experiencing is caused by the codec you are using to watch those hdtv.avi files.

It doesn't ff very fast. Anything above 2x and the screenrate goes below 1fps.

Do you know of a better codec to watch the files then?

The codec I believe I used is xvid. This bug is completely reproducible. And MP also becomes very unresponsive when FF or RW. It will take up to several minutes for a resume play command to take effect.

Is there any way to fix this? Is my comp too slow for the movie (720p, 384bitrate)? Or can this be fixed by using a different codec? In which case what would I use?
