After some minutes playing xvid files, MP freezes. It happens also when rewinding or fast forwarding the movie. The movie runs fine in Windows Mediaplayer 11.

The issue made me reinstall XP from scratch. I ran several tests by always starting on an image which I took before installing any codecs and MP. Here's the result:
    • The problem is not dependent on the codec: Neither ffdshow, DivX nor XVid helped solving the issue.
    • The issue appears on a 0.2.2.0 installation as well as on an installation with the latest SVN

Unfortunately, no useful log entries are produced (I have to restart the system using the shut down button once the issue appears). However, the text file I added to the pastebin (a GSpot export) gives some more details about an example movie causing the issue.

    GraphEdit shows:

    <Movie>
    |__ AVI Splitter --> DivX Decoder Filter --> Video Renderer
    |__ AC3Filter --> Default Direct Sound Device

Any help to solve this annoying issue and hints on how to track it down is appreciated.

    Hi G.

I recently had some problems with Xvid files won't play etc. It was the same from MP as well as WMP (v9 and v11). The problem went away after I upgraded to the latest version of Xvid.

Don't know if helps but it fixed it for me...

    /Peter

Thanks petsa. I have tried that as well. Didn't help - unfortunately.

The important difference to your problem is that on my system, the files are played perfectly using WMP.

please attach your mediaportal.log and if created the error.log after such a freeze to your first post.

btw. do you use a codec pack?
because i do not like that AC3filter is used for the playback in your case.

you can download the REAL xvid-codec -->here<-- (you have to uninstall all codecpacks and restart your PC before that. this should bring the merit settings back to normal))

Thanks, Chris - not only for your answer but also for your *inifinite* patience with all the users not following your instructions...

Since the devs strongly recommend not to use codec packs, I do not use them. I try to reduce the complexity on my system as much as possible. So, I decided to install only as many codecs as necessary. I even did not install the codecs delivered with MP. And that's why I did not install the XVid codec as well.

However, it does not matter which codec I use. The problem exists with all the codecs and their combinations:
I tried XVid, DivX, FFDShow (always most current versions) and the combinations of them. The movie always plays fine in WMP but not in MP - and this is the strange thing, isn't it?

I have added the MP log file and the error log to the pastebin. But as mentioned, there is nothing in it which helps.

    Thx again

    G.

    thats true.

one question about FFDShow, have you enabled support for all filters when installing?

I have been watching an xvid yesterday (Lost) with latest svn. no problems @ all.
will check which audio/video filter is used my MP @ home.

I have ffdshow installed to, but only enabled the support for mjpg.

just played an xvid here with current svn. all worked fine.
as you can see, mpa was used for the audio renderer

    Question:
    • have you tried different xvid files and NONE worked?
    • or have some worked?

so if i would have the issue you have i would.
    1. do a clean installation of mediaportal without any 3rd party plugins and no old files used
    2. also install the codecs which come with MediaPortal
    3. try to play the video
    if its still not working:
    1. uninstall every codec you have installed and reboot your pc
    2. installed the xvid codec from -->here<--
    3. try to play the video
If it is still not working, then i have no more ideas :sorry:

Meanwhile, I found the time for testing. I followed your instructions, which unfortunately did not help. Then, I played around with different settings: windowed mode, blue two skin instead of blue two wide etc.

Finally, I could watch several files without freezes :)) My investigations showed that the only difference in my system is the skin I use: Before, I used blue two wide, now I use blue two.

Tentative summary of my findings: MP freezes when playing xvid file on a system using the Blue Two Wide skin.

Can you reproduce this on your system?

    Thx for your support

    G.
