i'm sorry for this as i am fairly new here so please bear wih me.

i was planning on a portable htpc that has MP only... now i was wondering if i could possibly run MP on a XP embedded OS and could possibly hide the OS itself?

i dont know if this is possible, but i want my HTPC become an appliance... with that, although it is PC based, i dont want it to feel like a PC.

for example, when i turn on the power button, the appliance powers up and i can see MP starting up without even knwing that it is running on a windows platform...

get what i mean?

i don't if this could happen but, i guess this is possible...

well there is an option, autostart mp when window starts and also if you have a motherboard that supports shutdown from the mce remote or keyboard then you have a home appliance i guess

yes well, it will still load... windows.... log-in / log-off... shutting down windows... it's still everywhere... bu well, thaks anyways...

You can search for : "ScriptedLogon"

well, i did... thanks... the idea is good, at least i know where to start... i guess on an embedded system, i can customize my running processes at startup even without using his application... thanx once again...

anyways... speaking of embedded systems... i'm also new at this, do you by any chance know, where i should start?

I understand exactly what you want to do. I did the same thing with a CarPC in my last car. Nobody knew that Windows was anywhere except me :)

Normally when windows loads, "explorer" is the default shell

You can change the default shell to be Media Portal by altering a registry entry. Then when Windows loads you won't see explorer at all because it won't start. Instead just Media Portal will start. I haven't done this with my HTPC yet because I'm still fooling around with the config.

    I did it...

Sad to say, i actually installed MP on XP embedded...

i switched the default shell instead of explorer.exe to mediaportal.exe...

    i also included .net framework , direct x 9.0c ...

changed the logon options and everything... and whalllaa! xp is no where to be found...

pros are, embedded is cheaper, and you can include only the components needed for MP... just like creating your MP OS... lol

    anyways, it's working now...

and oh, about the appliance type? i purchased small hardware for my HTPC...

sizing it for maybe round 7X8 inches... using mini ITX boards and stuff...

i'm also customizing the skin as of the moment as i'm planning my monitors to be touch screen...

This is also what I want to do!
I now use laptops, but I would like to use just flat screens with MP embedded (one in each room of the house) as if they were TVs: without the look of a Pc, easy to use and fast , exactly as a TV.
So my question is: what is the hardware you are using with xp embedded? Model? Cost?
I searched a lot in internet and I didn't find : screen too small, or main characteristics not suitable for the media (graphic card, memory...) or no sound, no remote control, or too expensive...
Any idea? How is your system made?
    Thanks!

Also: do you know if there is enough space inside a LCD screen to install a mini ATX for example? Model?
