I'm going on holiday for a few days and may want to access my MP server from my laptop over the internet, to check if I want to record upcoming programs. I'm not sure if this is recommended or not, but I need to know the minimum ports I need to open and forward to the TV Server pc. I don't want to view any video. I've seen ports 554, 1433, and 31456 mentioned elsewhere, but which ones are necessary just to set future recordings etc with the MP client.

    Thanks.

yep (normally) all http communication is done thru port 80 so that should work for stuff like 4therecord (at least if the tools is configured to listen on port 80 and you don't have say a webserver also listening on that port, that last one will result in a conflict making the app started later not work).

You could also openup port 3389 for windows remote desktop functionality.
