Ok, extreme frustration has prompted me to post this.
I used to use MP without problem and it played all of my videos and everything quite nicely... (except WMV)
My version of MP was a bit old so I decided to go for a reinstall of the latest version while also updating my codecs with the latest version of K-lite.
This solves the WMV problem, but now I'm unable to play MPG files.
MP will attempt to play the file and then fail with an error. It seems to be all MPG files.
I've tried EVERY codec installed including the included MPV and MPA.
The videos play fine in every other video program.
DVD's play fine, as well as DVD formatted files on my HD.

I renamed a VOB to .VOB.MPG and it played as well...

I've tried EVERY codec in the list. Nothing works.

Here's my logs. You can see the Vob.mpg played, as well as a.mpg which is actually a Divx file. The others will not play.
I've searched the forums and found a few similar issues, but nothing seems to solve my problem. To top it all off, I got annoyed and uninstalled MP losing all settings without backing up my custom remote mappings or font changes which took forever... (Yeah, stupid of me, I know)

Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions for other things to try.

A lot of the admins/mods/devs on this forum will tell you to try and stay away from codec packs.
You can check for errors with filmerit.

Still no luck - try uninstalling the codec pack and follow the codec guide from Goose.

I uninstalled K-lite with no effect. Doesn't really explain why a file will play in all other players, but not MediaPortal, though. Like I said, I tried each and every codec in the list. Several MPG codecs like the Nero one, the ATI one, Ligos, MPV... all of them and none work.
These are not tricky MPG's... simple MPEG 1 files.

Also, I followed the codec guide before I did the reinstall with no effect. (last week)

    UPDATE:

Ok, now this is a weird one.
While trying to troubleshoot this issue I discovered an interesting phenomenon.
I had MP running on one screen and Graphedit on another. I was going to try to "connect to a running graph" to see what I could see. That doesn't work since MP never plays the file so there was nothing to connect to.
Anyway, I loaded up one of my MPG's into Graphedit while MP was open, then I tried to play a file within MP and guess what??? It played. All the other MPG's played as well.
To clarify, MP would play MPG's ONLY when Graphedit had an MPG open and showing it's graph.
I tested it a couple of times and sure enough, it works.

So, I did a test run with MP so I could generate a log file to look at.
I loaded Graphedit, then started MP and played 3 MPG's (I think one of them played twice)... They were B.mpg, C.mpeg, D.mpeg ... They all played just fine.
Then I closed Graphedit and played the same three files and none would play.

I looked at the logs and compared where one file played, with where the same file didn't play. There were two things which stood out.
The spot where the "Stop Radio" command was initiated was slightly different... and this was present in the log for the file when it didn't play.

    2007-12-30 22:47:31.718750 [Warn.][MPMain]: vmr9: pin:2 not connected:80040209

I have no idea what this is referring to and I do not know why they would play when Graphedit is open and running and will not when it is not...

    Any clues?

If using FFDShow Tryouts, enable mpeg1 (disabled by default) see if they then play.

and your problem is usually caused by a bad registry entry regarding mpeg files and which directshow filter to use.

I am having the exact same problem. My system is much clean and doesn't have any codec pack installed.
I have nvidia pure HD decoder and MPV installed.

I also can not play mpg file from myvideo but can play from any other player like windows media player etc. Looks like its a bug in the latest svn of MP.

Infact I tried playing the mpg file recorded by MP and my videos can't play that as well.

Here are the error logs from MP-

OK, I just found the solution from other post. You have to change the following in mediaportal.xml

    Edit MediaPortal.xml
Search for useTsFileSourceForMpegs and set that to no

It fixes my other issue of mpeg HD file no having audio also.

Ok, so I tried the edit mediaportal.xml thing, nothing.

Did a few fixes with filmerit and voila... my windows XP pro is now trash.
Wont boot so I can roll it back to the saved restore point...

So I have to reinstall WINDOWS...
After a nightmare filled night of installs, downloads, updates and crap that doesn't work any more I finally have a MP that plays MPGs...

Not sure it was worth it.

    Thanks

Sorry to here that in one way, but glad it was Windows that was screwing things up.

Using filmerit would not change a totally screwed setup only help, unless it was beyond this anyway.

Hopefully things will now improve for you.

Yeah, I had a couple of red lines in Filmerit so I did the restore point and let it edit my registry. I should have known better...
I'm guessing that with all the installs and uninstalls some portion of the windows part of the whole jigsaw got messed up.
I hope I didn't imply, with my frustration filled reply, that I blamed MP... MP is by far one of the most all-encompassing, mature, open-source programs I've ever seen. It's amazing that it does what it does.

As an editorial: If the net would just decide on a format and stick with it, we wouldn't have this codec hell that we have to deal with. As a casual video hobbyiest I would just be happy with one or two formats and really couldn't care less if one is "better" than the other as long as my video plays on my player.

    Thanks everyone! :D

good to hear ur back up and running

i myself had some problem with vista and " .ts " file reading ... not sure if they were linked in anyway but there u go

im getting a new pc next week and if all goes well ill be back up and running too !

codec packs are a definite NO-GO..i touched one once a few years ago and had to format the next day..purely down to that reason alone..i installed junk

right now..ffdshow is simply the best codec around for almost all formats (xvid, divx, mpg, ts, x264)..and its FREE

im using AC3Filter(or rather SPDIFER) for SPDIF passthru..its just an easy optical cable from pc to amp and there i go..sound..with 5.1 and DTS on my amp..its great!

x264 is a *new* codec that seems to be taking off in a big way recently with HD rips of blu-ray and hddvd movies..it will only get more and more popular..its superior to Xvid and Divx

if u use ffdshow for x264 u need a decent dual core/core2duo as the cpu is doing a LOT of work there..but honestly..thats the only drawback

h264 is used for blu-ray video
VC-1 is used for hddvd video

unfotunetly it seems that differnt companies will make different formats so we will have to buy their hardware/software..its just the way it goes
