Media Portal is crashing regularly - at least once or twice every 12 hours - and appears to be caused by MSVCR90.dll (please see the error reports attached).

When it does crash it leaves a distorted still image of what was playing at the time with a Windows message saying the program has had an error and shut down.

It only happens while watching tv. I haven't had it happen yet while watching a movie or movie/tv file, but as you'll see from the error files, the APPCRASH is in MediaPortal, not the TV server.

When it does crash, it doesn't seem to affect the reliability of the pc itself. It's never crashed, just MediaPortal.

On the weekend i uninstalled everything related to Media Portal, including plugins, and re-installed, but am still having the problem.

If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated, as I'm about to strip the bloody thing of its HTPC related parts and turn it into my next normal PC, and buy a trouble-free PVR.

Ooops, forgot to attach the error files.

Each error message I get when it crashed is identical to the one below, even the timestamps, so I'll only include text from one:

Thanks for those who've looked through my post. No solution by the looks.

I've had enough. Moving to Windows Media Centre.

It might not be anywhere near as full-featured and flexible, but at least it gets the basics right.

This thing is just too buggy for me and my lack of tech expertise. Good luck to all.

I'm *really* sorry to hear that!
The error you reported is very unusual. Of course I'm not saying that it doesn't happen:

    https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/...al-crash-fault-module-name-msvcr90-dll-84385/
    https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/general-support-51/tv-server-crashes-msvcr90-dll-88279/
    http://translate.google.com/transla...CR90.dll+mediaportal+crash&hl=en&sa=X&prmd=iv

It is extremely difficult for the team to solve any problem they can't reproduce - I've certainly never come across anything like this before. Furthermore, although I'm part of the team I would have very little idea how to solve such a strange error as this. A little more patience might have given one of the more experienced team members a chance to look at the problem. Please understand that we are all very busy at present preparing for and testing MP 1.2.0.

Once again, I'm sorry to hear that you've decided to move on...

[Edit: what little I can say from a google search is that it looks like the DLL is part of the Visual C++ redistributable which is a required component for MediaPortal:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update

    * Note: Using MP 1.0.0 or above the installer will automatically install latest Visual C++ Redistributable Package if necessary.
    * Note: If the component is downloaded and installed manually, be sure to use the x86 package even on x64 systems.
    * Note: On Microsoft's download page, Windows 7 is not listed for this package. Nevertheless it is required and working fine for Windows 7, too.

You might try reinstalling the redistributable and making sure you've done all your Windows updates.]

Didn't mean my post to sound like I was having a go at the MediaPortal community, just frustration with the product and my ignorance/system config.

Thanks for the additional info re using the x86 version, though I'm pretty sure i've installed using the auto option during the many re-installs I've done over the past month or two, which I'm guessing would mean it automatically selects the x86 version?

I've already re-installed the redistributable, as I managed to make the connection between the .dll and C++, through I did download the x64 version. Might try doing this as a last attempt.

I'd imagine so. In my case the installer has always automatically downloaded and installed vcredist if I need it and things just worked. Having said that, I still run on XP so I don't really have the same 32/64 bit "issues" as users of Vista or 7.

Did you ever check the MediaPortal/TV Server logs after the crashes? It is a long shot, but there may be something in there that helps to narrow down the cause. Even if there isn't an error per-se, it might help to know exactly what was happening (eg. tuning, changing channel etc.) when the crash occurred.

Got it running at home now in de-bug mode. I'm hoping I get home to find it's crashed and the log tells me something.

    Excellent :)
I was just chatting to the team on your behalf and the first thing suggested was to run in debug and see if the logs pick up anything...

Must say I got mixed up between what a log is and what the error info provided by Windows is. Thought they were one and the same. Apparently the info I provided in relation to the error in my first post is useless.

I've since spoken to a MediaPortal-user mate of mine and will post in bugs section when it craps itself again now that I'm in debug mode.

    Thanks for the replies.

Yeah, it is a bit useless, but then it might be all we have to go on because there is no guarantee that anything gets written in the MP logs. That is part of the reason why it is so hard to solve problems like this. :(

FYI, MediaPortal logs are in c:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\logs\ and c:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal\TV Server\logs\. I guess you know that now...

The only other place to look for more info would be the system eventlog. I'm not sure how to get there in Windows 7 but a Google search would surely tell you.

This is probably the only time I'd say this: let's hope for a crash!

I am wondering if that issues does not point towards a general error in the system. So the same should/could happen with MS-MediaCenter and even WindowsMediaPlayer
I have not seen such a crash yet in 6 years of using MP. And I have seen a lot. :D

    I have a few questions:
    MPEG2 Audio Codec: ffdshow
Could you please test with MPC-MPA or the windows 7 audio filter and check if the error still occurs?

Media Portal is crashing regularly - at least once or twice every 12 hours - and appears to be caused by MSVCR90.dll (please see the error reports attached).
    • How many times did the HTPC go to sleep during these 12 hours?
    • Did the error occur close after you woke it up?
    • Does it happen when you play specific media? (LiveTV or avi, mp4, mkv, etc)
