I have a set up at home consisting of a sony TV that has a lan connection and a laptop. I bought a wifi router over the weekend. I want to stream nusic from my laptop to the TV using the wifi. What the best way to config MP to do this?

You perhaps have one/more of the following possibilities:

1) You use MediaPortal as software and connect your laptop directly to your tv (hdmi / dvi / ...).
2) If your television has the possibility to process upnp /dlna streams AND you use Windows 7 on your laptop you can follow the following post of mine:

MediaPortal itself has no possibility to stream by upnp. Use Windows Media Player insted.
There is some plugin for MediaPortal called UPNP Renderer which gives you the possiblity to send UPNP Streams TO MediaPortal so you can here music from othere pcs on your MediaPortal pc but that is the wrong direction for your purpose.
