I am a brand new MP user, and it's pretty cool, except for when I go to my videos, start playing something, pause, then escape out to the Home menu, then hit the X icon to minimize, except that the minimize really doesn't work.

The MP screen becomes untouchable, though the video name scroll continues. I can't alt-tab out of this. Even if I get the task manager up, I still can't see it for the quasi-untouchable MP screen.

I still see the MP home page, but as I drag my mouse over parts of the screen, elements of what would have been below MP briefly flicker, and I can interact with them; for instance, any button, like the back history button in FireFox, will flicker as I mouse over blindly (since I can only see the MP screen), and I can activate the buttons. Or quicklaunch icons. they will all flash for a split second as I mouse over. The only way to get out of this situation is to find the MP tray item (hover over), then r-click to make it exit.

Any idea why this happens?

Does this happen when you stop playing the video as well.

Could be related to DX9 exclusive mode being selected, have a look here and see if any of this sounds familiar.

it sounds similar to what I read there, though as I remember, if I stop the video instead of just keeping it on pause and then try to minimize, it seems to work correctly. I will check the DX9 exclusive mode issue later tonight, though, when I get home.

Also, never has MP actually crashed and forced me to reboot.

Reading through that linked post again, the symptoms sound familiar, but I am certainly running a heftier video card than these people were over a year ago.

Again, I'm new to MP, but by disabling DirectX mode as they call it (same thing as DX9 exclusive as you call it?), does this mean that my screen will look less, uh, pretty? I hope not... and you'd think there'd be an official fix to this after a year :)

But hey, it's free software, and pretty damned fine software by any account.

OK. I went ahead and disabled the DX9 Exlusive mode, which prevented the issue I described (again, not a crash). However, now I am seeing tearing.

Here's what's transpired (not sure if this is relevant). I wanted to play matroska (mkv) files, but this capability didn't seem to be native in MP. I installed Haali MatroskaSplitter and ffdshow. I was then able to play mkv files, which is when I noticed the tearing. I did some searching in the forums and it seems like turning off DX9 Exclusive mode has caused tearing for others.

so... unfortunately, this DVR I built is for my parents, and while I find it pretty easy to quit out of the screen overlay issue I originally described, I don't know that I could get my parents to figure that out.

Is there any other way to avoid the tearing OR the screen overlay issue?
