Hello,

I'm new to all of this, but not in computers (IT system engineer).
I nearly have finished to build my house (Switzerland) and have installed CAT6 wall pluggs everywhere :)
My idea was first to push the standard VHF/UHF signal through my cables, I then I found MediaPortal...

Now I am wondering if a MediaPortal server can be the solution to distribute TV over my network to up to 8 clients ?
As I have to distribute 4 TNT channels and at least 6 analogic Sat channels, what kind of hardware do I have to choose ?
The size of the installation is not a real problem as I own a full 42u rack.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thierry.

Ok, Thanks anyway, even if I'm a little bit disappointed with the local vision of open source comunnity ...
:(
I will learn by myself. I was just trying to understand what I need before buying some expensive parts.

:sorry:

First of all: Welcome to MediaPortal ;)
So why are you disappointed? Is it because no one answered your question immediately? Very often our users do not answer because your question has been answered a thousand times already - you just need to search a bit ;).
Maybe you could start with our documentation? Just click "Support" above and read the "HTPC solutions". There you will find a lot of useful information.

    Thanks for your reply Catavolt.
In fact I have sevral issues, and the first is that english is not my mother tongue ;) it's not so easy for me regarding some technical aspects described in english.
I tried to search in the forum for previous replies to similar questions but I found nothing or contradictory informations, I guess it is because I am not searching with the right words.
My main problem is that I am unable, for the moment, to understand some technical aspects such as :
    - How many cards do I need, or how many TV channels can be viewwd simultaneously over one TV card ?
    - Can one MediaPortal Server serve up to 8 clients or more ?
    - Can Mediaportal stream live TV to a standard format that is supported by upcoming "LAN" TV ?

The solution looks really good and cool, but I need to be sure of few things before building such configuration based on some expensive HW.
As I already have 2 rack servers, FC SAN storage, etc... I would like to avoid some fighting with my wife with an additionnal material that won't fit our needs ;)

    Regards,
    Thierry.

Depends, you can watch all channels that are broadcasted on the same transponder (see DVB-S ? Wikipedia)

    - Can one MediaPortal Server serve up to 8 clients or more ?
I THINK so, but I haven't actually ever tested more than 3 clients at once. Guess this depends on the hw used.

    - Can Mediaportal stream live TV to a standard format that is supported by upcoming "LAN" TV ?
Sorry I don't know what this is, but MediaPortal streams the ts stream over rtsp, both standard protocols.

    DieBagger,

I don't understand German (your wiki link). When you tell "channels on the same transponder", does it mean on the same frequency? Actually with my DVB-T card, all of my channel are broadcasted on same frequency and I can watch and record multiple channels on same times. Is it the same with Satellite?

    Thank you!

    tjacquem,

    - Can one MediaPortal Server serve up to 8 clients or more ?

At home, I can serve 4 clients on same time without problems. I've never tested more than 4.

thanks for all these good news ;)
Regarding the LAN TV protocol, we have to refer to DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) which is used by Sony, Samsung, Phillips, LG, Seagate, Promise, and many others...

Anyway, this was the less important point for me. I guess I can start building my media network at home... :)
