What was wrong with your permissions, in case somebody else has the same problem?

I too am a newbie to MediaPortal - everything works fine other than when I try to record I get the "unable to connect mpg2 pin" error as well. The vista user is admin level too. Would be very useful to know how you fixed it and what permissions you changed!

Hi, the card is ok. The problem is Vistas new security features. Admin having two user tokens etc. Media Portal needs to be with elevated permissions it would seem. With UAC disabled it works fine. I am just in the middle of hacking the registry (as Home Premium does not have the policy editor). Will advise shortly. As for my name, old gaming handle - pronounced simply Zappos. /\ being the A....

I just make mine run as administrator and have to sat OK to Window's silly questions.........

Yes I do understand the increased security benefit, but it still can be a pain :)

Yes I agree with the benefits of UAC but it certainly causes problems so mine is disabled.

I have found a registry hack to disable the windows systemtray nag message about having UAC disabled if anyone is interested.

Incidentally, I ran some diagnostics when this error is generated whilst UAC is on and the results were interesting. It appears that MediaPortal tries to access the Media Resources in the registry, specifically the Direct Sound configuration when setting up recording or timeshifting. As it is not running with elevated security, access is denied to MP and I'm fairly sure it is this that is causing the Unable to Connect MPG2 pin error. Need to change the permissions on that registry group and see if that solves the issue.

Disabling UAC on Vista Ultimate works without any other hacks, or is this a setup with more than one user on it.

Also once installed re-enabling UAC should not cause any problems either, unless premium is that much different.

Hmmm, never had that message nagging me about UAC off, can you not turn UAC off in user accounts as i am able to do.

    Hi Ray,

Well, I havent used Ultimate (apart from the beta) so not sure on the underlying security differences. The machine in question has only one account (apart from the hidden admin of course) and UAC is disabled from the user accounts. I am suprised that you dont get the nag message though.

However, even after install I cannot record without UAC disabled. As pointed out above, it generates a load of access denied errors when you sniff the processes and registry accesses and results in the standard MPG2 error. I'll investigate some more in tomorrow!
