Hi, my solution for now for my blu ray disks is to rip them to ts files (anydvd -> rip video to hard drive then use tsmuxer to rip to a ts file.) This works fine sometimes and mediaportal plays the ts file fine and sometimes I need to rename to .mkv. The problem is that sometimes I have no sound (for example horton hears a who is ripped from DTS-HD DTS but still has no sound) and then other movies (like cars) has just stereo sound. I'm using haali media splitter and ffdshow and I have no problems with DVDS with dolby digital or dts sound tracks playing just fine.

Any tips?

Thanks.

Hi Misterfrog,
You are on the right track, and very close. Here is what I do when I rip a blu-ray...

1. If it has DTS-HD or DTS audio, I first rip ONLY the audio track.
2. Run the audio track through eac3to found here -> eac3to to convert to ac3 (dolby digital)
3. Run TsRemuxer, add the new ac3 track created from step 3, and the video track from the blu-ray disk.
4. Rip your blu-ray to harddrive and enjoy!

VERY important....You do not have to rip the blu-ray to your hard drive first. You can just open the blu-ray disk in tsremuxer like you would a ripped file on the harddrive.

Good luck!

I like the instructions you give. They seem fairly simple and not too time consuming but would you mind dumbing them down a bit for a newbie like myself? :D

So do you use tsremux to extract the audio file only then take that file and run it in the eac3to to convert the audio then run tsremux again to combine the video file and audio file? I'm a little confused though. When do you rip the 1080p file? Rip it the same time as the audio file. I'm about to give this a shot. I can play M2TS files directly in MP but the problem is some BD play the wrong language by default or the sound is choppy. I ripped the same BD as MrFrog but the sound is choppy. I hope I can find an easy solution to rip BD's.

Thanks again,
BTW: Did you get much snow Sunday or Monday? We got hammered here in the upstate of SC.

Okay, I think I'm getting somewhere now. Eac3to is not exactly an intuitive app but none the less, I think I've managed to convert the HD audio track that I ripped from the BD to ac3. I'm currently in the process of using tsmuxer to put the video and the newly converted audio file back together.

I just hope the audio and video sync properly.

Thanks again WC for pointing me in the right direction!

Cheers,
mr

Thanks again WileE for pointing me in the right direction. Below are the instructions I'm following to pull off my BD rips perfectly.

I've modified WileE's instructions a bit with more detail. Please correct me if need be.

1. If it has DTS-HD or DTS audio, first rip ONLY the audio track using TsRemuxer.
2. Run the audio track through eac3to to convert to ac3 (dolby digital).
3. Within eac3to, select the Source file ripped from the BD then select the eac3to audio tab (second tab from left) enter file name and save as type to ac3.
4. Under input file or folder, tick the drop down arrow and select the source specified under the first tab.
5. You may have to re-enter the save as file name and extension (ac3) then hit the button RUN COMMAND LINE (tab specific). dos box will appear with "---" then decode info.
6. Run Tsmuxer, add the new ac3 track created from step 3, and the video track from the blu-ray disk (video track first) as m2ts format. (SELECT ENG FOR LANGUAGE)
7. Play the single m2ts file within media portal.

Excellent! You got it to a tee!

PS We got about 2 inches of snow, enough to shut down most of Raleigh :)

    Thanks again my friend.

We ended up with 6 inches of snow. Gaffney and Rock Hill got around 9 or 10 inches.

    Fun while it lasted.

Depends really. My Son's BD of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is only about 13GB while Transformers is +35GB. I only plan to hold a few BD movies at a time for my family or movies that my son will watch over and over. Most of my movies are DVD's from my collection.

It is tempting though since the quality of some BD are so good that you want everything in this format.

I prefer to re-encode to h264 & dts/ac3 in an .mkv containner, even at 3 hrs long and 1080p I can keep them down to about 12gb, usually DVD9 size (8.0GB thereabouts) and DVD5 size (4.37GB) for 720p. It can take up to 16hours though to do this with a dual core but I just let it run overnight.

Good info and thanks for your input. I will have to try this for those movies that I want to keep on my drives or when space becomes an issue. What about quality when you re-encode using this method?

    Thanks again,
