The TV-server configuration is only offering me the .ts option and I would prefer the .mpeg. I am surprised that the .ts files are not huge as predicted by the Help in Nebula's DigiTV file, so .ts do not seem to be a problem.

"Record Entire Transport Stream

For advanced users only. The Transport Stream is the raw data stream that contains all of the programmes on a single UHF channel. There can be as many as 8 separate programmes in each stream and so recording it will consume disk space very quickly.

Selecting this option means that if you start a recording, it will record the entire data stream present at the time rather than just the programme you're watching. This was especially useful with older versions of DigiTV as it allowed you to record multiple programs if they were being broadcast simultaneously on the same multiplex, e.g. if you wanted to record both BBC1 and BBC2 at the same time. In short: MediaPortal no longer supports recording to mpeg. Try searching the forum for more details as to why.

Well, this is rubbish if the description is meant to be on MediaPortal, and I have never seen a standalone DVB-T/S/C recorder that recorded anything else than the actual stream being watched. You will NOT record the entire MUX (hence the 8 channels).

Thanks Spragleknas. It seems I am damned if I do and damned if I don't read documentation and search the forums. :( ;)

Thanks pilehave. That is one less niggly worry. I was hoping someone would reassure me.

I'm also a convert from the DigiTV world. It seems that the "ts" format is slightly different between DigiTV and MP - for DigiTV it is indeed a file containing the full MUX data content with however many channels are on that MUX, and which can be decoded later. For MP, it is a single channel and is equivalent but not identical to an mpg file. It's a bit of a pain for me as I need to convert it to mpg to use with a MediaMVP streaming device which does not recognise .ts - I use VideoRedo for doing that. I would use VR for trimming and tidying things I wanted to keep anyway, but I never needed to do this for "transient" recordings and it means that MP cannot be used as a time-shifting tool and you need to wait to the end of the recording to be able to convert it.

I have a feeling that there might be a plugin that supports MediaMVP directly but it is not always easy to come up with the right search on this forum, or know where to look as a newcomer. I might also be wrong about the timeshifting aspects (I use a "conventional" DVB-T TV for viewing, not a PC, so native timeshifting/viewing is out) but again, I hope to stumble across useful information one day:)

Well, Nebula's software can record the whole mux into a single file. Few other applications can do that as well, including TVE3 with debug setting.

TVE3 will allow multiple recodings from the same mux (with one tuner). This in my opinion is much better than just raw dump from the transport stream that Nebula's software offers as there is no need for post processing the recording to remove the unwanted data streams.

Thanks for the comprehensive confirmation nealeb. I see u r a fellow VRD disciple. No-one in this field should leave home without it.

I'd like to be able to help with your .ts issue but I can't. I don't know what happened to the mpeg-or-tp option but it seemed a handy one and might be simple to incorporate in MP in the future. Perhaps a developer in that module could help e.g. tourettes in the previous reply.
