Hi,

First I will admit I'm a total noob to MediaPortal and am really investigating certain avenues before I purchase a HTPC, TV card and start tinkering. I am however a very long running XBMC (on xbox1) user.

I have a few questions...

In what file format are recordings stored? Does this differ whilst recording and after recording?
Can the MediaPortal "TV Server" record to a network share?
If I can save to a network share, would I be able to watch a recording file from say XBMC?
If so, would I be able to watch something whilst its still recording?

Hoping someone can help...

The default recording is now done in .ts format, so you have the total stream recorded, this may include multiple languages\subtitles and is now considered to be the format to use (mpeg has been disabled for 1.0.1 because of recording failures and other issues).

Network questions will leave to someone doing exactly what you want, sorry not network atm.

Ideally, you would want your tuner cards & available storage space to be on the same PC, & run the server on this system. Otherwise, you would have to fiddle with Windows user access rights, to be able to get the server to use a remote directory as a timeshift/recording directory.

You could just share the recording folder on the server, to make the media available to anything else capable of browsing network shares.

Thank you both for your replies... from what you said I understand the answers to my questions are...

In what file format are recordings stored? Does this differ whilst recording and after recording?
TS file format, no its the same

Can the MediaPortal "TV Server" record to a network share?
Yes, with some configuration however for best performance local storage is recommended

If I can save to a network share, would I be able to watch a recording file from say XBMC?
Yes (provided XBMC can play TS files!)

If so, would I be able to watch something whilst its still recording?
    ??Anyone??

    Yes, same with timeshift files.

You can also re-encode the ts files to an Mpeg-4 format (XviD) and put in an .mkv or .avi container to save disk space.

I'll try and chime in here. As a current user of XBMC and possibly soon-to-be user of MediaPortal (strictly for recording purposes), I am not currently able to playback a file while it is still being recorded (this is from SageTV and GBPVR and I assume it would be the same with Mediaportal)

I used to be able to do this before I switched from XBOX to Windows so I'm assuming it is a DVDPlayer vs. Mplayer thing in XBMC.

You can watch something while still recording it. You can choose from beginning, or from current live point.
