I have a shuttle with optical out and I'm using a fiber cable from it to my Sony receiver. I used the same setup from my old DVD player and Satellite receiver and when 5.1 content was ran, the LED on the front of my Sony would populate all 5.1 boxes to show that I was getting surround sound. My Sony will decode DTS, Dolby, etc.

I was using the MPA Decoder then installed and tried AC3Filter but both give me the same results. I'm certain that my rips are good and I've selected the 5.1 sound settings in the DVD menu, etc.

It has to be something in Windows XP or MP that I don't have configured correctly. I get sound from my center channel speaker and two front speakers (they are also populated and lit on the LED on the front of my receiver but the rear speakers are NOT).

I'm running XP Pro SP3 with MP 1.0 and the imbedded digital audio is RealTek HD. I've done a bit of reading but can't seem to find the answer to my problem. I'm certain my receiver is working as it was working with my DVD player just a few weeks ago.

It has to be a setup issue on my part.

Thank you for any help you can provide or a link to a possible solution.

Cheers,
moonracer

To get my 5.1 working on all speakers with a Gigabyte DS4H with Realtek HD, i had to switch to DOLBY 5.1 within the REALTEK-Audio-application...

After doing so, sound came from all cylinders ( :-D ) - without it, just Center, FL and FR. No further fumbling around in MediaPortal, just goofing around with the actual driver set for the Real-Chip on board.

I found it! Thank you! I had not enabled 5.1 under the I/O section within the Realtek configuration application.

Thanks again!

I'm having a similar issue - I am outputting all audio over HDMI from HTPC into AV Receiver, and while I can set AV Receiver to multichannel output, this is not giving me proper 5.1 surround sound on movies ripped from DVD (all in .vob format with original DVD structure).

I initially thought your solution would work for me, but thinking about it, I am not using the Realtek audio device, just the onboard HDMI, which is Intel.

Unless anyone can confirm that I should be getting the full 5.1 experience over HDMI, I think my solution is to only send video over the HDMI cable, and get an optical cable from the HTPC to the AC Receiver, and send 5.1 audio via the Realtek application.

Edit: I was being a bit of a muppet - having re-read my post, I went into MP config, and changed the default audio device for video playback and audio playback to the HDMI Device, and everything worked..

Thanks for triggering the brain activity with your posts though guys - got me working! :D

Looks like I spoke too soon. I changed to 5.1 in the Realtek HD control panel and now all the lights are lit on my receiver but I'm not getting any sound out of my center channel nor both rear speakers at all. I've changed every setting known to mankind with my receiver and I can make it produce sound on all speakers but it's not surround. It's like I'm getting stereo only.

Now I have a setting on my receiver called AFD which is like auto-config. To be safe, I could always set to this so that whatever the type of audio being sent to the receiver, it would play it correctly. I only get 2 speakers to work.

I installed AC3Filter and tried changing settings there but no luck. This sucks not having true 5.1. What else can I try or do to solve this?

Thanks for the help and sorry for the false positive.

In my desperation to get 5.1 working, I installed the AC3Filter and tried configuring it but no luck. The sound was muted and no 5.1.

So I selected MP as my audio controller (back to the default) for Videos but this time I actually went in the config of MP audio and selected SPDIF and now I have true 5.1! The volume is much louder and it's clear that surround sound is working. The sound difference was immediate!!!

Sorry for my foolish mistake. I hope this thread will help other new MP users.

MP is so nice!

Thanks,

Glad to hear it fndelta! Picture quality is certainly important but if you don't have 5.1, why bother with watching a movie...IMO.

Thanks for sharing.
