Hi Folks,

well, my graphic card died because of too much dust in the fan :)
So, i have to bye a new one for my htpc.
After afew research i stumbled upon the Geforce 9400 GT. Its cheap (a few 40-50 €) and is passive cooled (silent).
What do you guy think? Is this a good decision?
I dont want to play games with. Just pure HTPC needs and no HD content.

Any experience? Suggestions?

that one should be perfect for you.
For great HD, a 9600 would be better, but I'm pretty sure a 9400 would do anyway.
Since you don't have any interest in HD at this stage, then that card will be all you need.

Since it's passive, then just make sure the case has enough airflow to cool it down.

    Cheers,
    Marcus.

Note that the 8400/8500/8600 are great for playing HD (full hw acc) - the 9 series don't have full hw acc.!! (see the product info on the nvidia website)

I have a 8500GT myself and can play HD content (1080i) with around 5% system load and it has passive cooling.

    Hello!

I looked at this links, but the 9400gt chip is also using HA, like 8500gt. There aren't differences.
But a 8500GT is cheaper and the power consumption is also lower. I'm looking for a new card, too. I'm having an onboard Radeon 3200 and there are some problems, like flickering, bad deinterlacing and so on. A 8500GT would be a good solution.

Thank you guys for your fast replies.
I think i will stick with the 9400 gt.
Can anybody tell me how hot it is getting? How hot, when doing nothing and how hot when dispolaying content?
I will have another look at the 8500gt, but i think this card is a little bit more expensive and maybe hotter?

Oh the tdp of 9400GT is round about 50W (Chip only), the card with the 8500gt is consuming 40Watts as maximum!
The price is 50€ for the card, for the 9400GT it's same.

I have a passive 9400 by Asus. I bought two for two cheap servers at work.
When doing nothing the card is warm but nothing to worry about. I think even when it struggling, it wouldn't be too bad. These passive cards are not too heavily stressed. It's not like the memory or core runs superfast or anything. I think the manufacturers realise that most of these cards are destined for htpc's
