Update: Definitely going with the i3-2105.

Using Windows 7 for the OS.

The only thing is the remote. The reason I'm even asking about this is that it needs to pass the wife test. So nothing too complex :D

Any suggestions?

I was looking at the Harmony One remotes. Does any particular one stand out?

Finally, are there any good smartphone apps that can control mediaportal? I'm thinking primarily Android and Symbian.

Update for others who might read this later:
Watching live TV is really smooth. CPU usage while watching recorded TV is less than 10%. Most of the trouble I encountered was when watching recorded TV. When fast forwarding a recorded TV show, at 2x and 4x everything is fine, but things get weird at 8x. It's probably a configuration issue I haven't figured out yet. Also, rewinding a recorded TV show seems to freeze the display. There seems to be a half second delay when switching channels and I had MP crash once on me (I installed watchdog, so I have the logs).

System config:
Gigabyte z68ma-d2h-b3
i3-2105
8GB DDR3 1066
HVR-2200
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
power supply: 400W

I also have an HVR-900H USB TV Tuner that I plan to plug in to see if I can add another tuner to the mix.

You don't say which MP version, but MP 1.2.0 beta handles fast forward/rewind much better than earlier versions.
