I have a Hauppauge 1600 and PAL receiver. The receiver exports to Composite. I have a Composite-to-S-Video converter which I can use on my Hauppauge input. When I try to play the feed on my WinTV (Hauppauge), it doesn't work. Hauppauge Tech Support said to install GB-PVR or MediaPortal.

Before installing this, can you tell me if what I'm trying to accomplish will work with MediaPortal? Will I be able to view and record a PAL video S-Video source that has been converted from Composite Video and input into my Hauppauge card with MediaPortal?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, MediaPortal will allow you to setup a channel to the HP1600's s-video input and view it as a TV channel in MP and record it.

Awesome! Even though the signal is PAL and the Hauppauge card requires me to convert the composite video to s-video?

I had a look at the card's specs and it does not support 'PAL', only 'NSTC'. So the answer is NO for the 'PAL', and YES for the 'composite video to s-video'. If you have a 'PAL' signal, then you should buy a TV card that supports 'PAL'...even if you use composite or s-video.
Then also, converting composite to s-video could give you a bad picture in the end...I tried it before and had lines running everywhere.

I was told by Hauppauge that the PVR 1600 DOES indeed support PAL. And when I preview the S-Video#1 on 2 channel, i see a weak signal when I have my receiver plugged in, but my transmitter off. If I turn my transmitter on, it instantly turns to horizontal lines. So I know the Receiver is picking up signal from my transmitter because it's userping the feed from the weak signal (perhaps a nannycam in the neighborhood). How do I make it so that the signal that I'm transmitting is read on my MediaPortal correctly? All TV channels come in clear as a bell. And I assume the nannycam signal (the weak one) that I'm picking up is in NTSC. Can I FORCE the S-Video#1 Channel to decode my signal as PAL to play/show correctly?

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Sorry I dont understand your statement "my receiver plugged in, but my transmitter off", so I cant respond to that. As far as the HVR1600... the following link states only "NSTC/ATSC/QAM" support....and nothing about "PAL".

    WinTV-HVR-1600 Product overview

Remember if you input a "PAL" signal into a "NTSC" receiver you will get an out of sync black&white picture...which could look like a "weak signal" as stated by you.

hauppauge usually lets the composite inputs run both ntsc and pal. It is only the tuner that is limited. You need to set the source up as an analog cable input, you need to also set the video signal to Pal. I don't have a 1600, but my old 250 can do this without problem, assuming your receiver is doing all the tuning you should be okay.

setup a new channel in wintv using the input and pal video signal -- beware there are several types of PAL signal.
