Can I use this software to record personal DVDs from my DVD drive to a portable hard drive? Do I even need the mediaportal program? Would appreciate some help. I'm a 72 yr old newbie.

Above is a plugin for Mediaportal, this does require Mediaportal to be installed though, do you want a home theatre pc software just for this.
Maybe you should look at the MEDIAPORTAL - free media center - Features and see if that is what you really want, or just a dvd ripper like dvd decrypter 3.5.4.0 (google) etc.
