pinnacle 800e works.. sometimes (1 Viewer)

Hello, ive been a long time fan of mediaportal, but only recently have i gotten my remote working with other software. Without a remote a HTPC isnt as useful or friendly to use. I have also gotten alot, and i do mean alot of help on this forum not by asking questions but by obsurving already asked questions pertaining to my problems and it has all worked and for that i would like to thank the many users of this forum and their time assisting others, you help doesnt go unnoticed.

ok that out of the way here is my problem for anyone who may like to help. I have a pinnacle pctv 800e, ive gotten it to find all my channels (analog cable) and it works sometimes, but other times when i go to open tv in mediaportal, or preview a channel mediaportal freezes (or tv server setup when previewing). sometimes if im persistant enough and restart everything including tv server enough times they tv works perfect, that is until i restart my pc or restart mediaportal. any assistance to help me get my medaportal setup to be a little more reliable would be greatly appreciated. everything else ive been able to set up with a little difficulty, but who doesnt like i challenge. So far ive gotten the epg to work, my remote to work, added channel logos, and a couple plugins. like i said if anyone can help me i would appreciate it, let me know if you need any logs or details about my setup.

and if anyone would like some help getting as far as i have so far maybe i could offer some assistance, i feel i owe it to the community (karma and all that) so feel free to ask me any questions and ill try to help best i can.

a little bit of an update, now tv works sometimes for a minute, then shuts off, and sometimes works with no problem at all. when it stops working i have to shut down mediaportal, and shut down tvservice from taskmanager, then it works again. things i have tried so far are; changing codecs in the mediaportal setup page, installed the mediacenter driver for my pinnacle 800e tuner, looked at the filter graph with graphedit (dont really know what all that means in graphedit so i didnt touch it but it seemed to look about right) i looked in the tv log file and most of the time when it doesnt work, it gives the error no audiovideo found. in the log it tunes the channel fine, locks it in and everything, then when it goes to read the .ts file it seems to not find anything in there. I really want this program to work cas its the best software ive found (retail or open source) and it does absolutly everything i need and want it to do and much much more. still hoping someone can figure out whats going on and at least point me in the right direction

another update, i did a complete reinstall even though ive read on alot of forums that didnt help anyone. still same problem, mostly itll work at first, then freeze, clicking the tv on button to turn off the tv then turning the tv back on will give the error message no audio video found. i think this is a issue with the time shifting file. if i open the time shifting buffer folder sometimes it will create the time shifting files but sometimes i dont see it even create the files. i increased the wait for ts file to 30 seconds no change, i changed the time shifting file size to 20mb and increased the amount of ts files to about 60, so far its working but im not hopeful. im thinking this may be a bug because i see alot of forum posts for no audio video. *crosses fingers* come on media portal 2 come out from hiding in the development cave. there really arent any other htpc programs out there that i like but at the same time main reason i want the htpc is for the tv viewing, and the software that comes with the pinnacle tuner is an absolute joke, but no tv=dealbreaker. as im writing this the tv froze, ill upload my tv.log file, lasted about 9 minutes this time. this has worked before in the past but suddenly its not lasting much more then 10-20 minutes then freezes.

sorry about that, I looked for an attach option but didn't see one, i'll be sure to look harder next time, still no luck in getting this to work reliably by the way. Which is unfortunate because I love the layout of this program, highly configureable, user friendly, all around good program. Guess im still stuck twidleing my thumbs till meda portal V2.0 (hold breath) keep up the good work devs, you've almost got it

Ok, I would officially like to call this a Bug.
Steps I have now taken since my last post
Reinstalled windows XP (have also tried everything with windows xp pro, and home editions)
side note on that first step, the tuner (pinnacle 800e) does have windows media center drivers, I installed them, and windows media center works with my tuner. but after about 10 minutes of live tv, the video stops working and I have to hit stop, then resume to get video back

after a fresh windows install, I installed all things required to run mediaportal suggested on the install instructions.

installed windvr for the software encoders

did a channel scan (it picked up all my channels)

opened mediaportal, navigated to live tv mode, tv plays, for about 20 minutes then sound and video freezes

*head scratching*

The "TV center" program that comes with the card works, but is absolutely terrible in almost every way, the EPG is a joke, and the gui isnt remote control friendly (why bother including the remote with the tuner)

I have also tried Cyberlink PowerCinema
That software works good with my tuner, watched tv for at least 30 minutes, no freezes however I do not want to use that software.
I think I have tried every other media center application and have yet to find one I like that is:
A)free
B)Open for adjustments the way I like
C)plugin friendly with plugins to do just about everything I've been able to think up

so for a recap, everything works perfect in mediaportal with my tuner, until about 10-20 mins of live tv watching, then sound and video come to a hault.

Am I using the wrong software encoder?

Is there a way I can use the Pinnacle software encoders that the "TV Center" software uses?

Can I change which software encoder mediaportal uses at all? perhaps with graphedit? (which im about to fiddle with some more)

Is there some bug with the program that is making my dreams of the perfect media center just out of my reach? (which is what I think the problem may be, big sad face on that one)

So whatever it may be, if theres any of the software devs out there looking, I need some help here, pretty pretty please make your software work with my tuner.

below I have "attached" my logs, and a big hug for anyone who can help me firgure this out. And not just for me, for all the other unfortunate pinnacle 800e sufferers out there like me.

That particular device is very picky about a couple of things. For one you need a short (4"-6") high quality USB cord. Also you need to preferably make it's the only device on that hub or at the very least make sure anything else on that hub is very low power. I also go over all the USB cords/connectors with DeOxIt once a year. It can also be picky about drivers especially on Vista as can the 801e (It's completely different hardware from the 800e and runs cooler plus has QAM) I haven't used it with XP though since shortly after Vista came out so I really can't help you with which drivers work best in XP. I'm currently struggling my way though setting up Media Portal using a 800e and 801e dual setup but the 800e is for HDTV from an antenna so I'm only using the digital tuner but it's stable and practically set itself up (I already had the best Vista drivers for it and had it working in Media Center) The 801e is for Clear QAM over cable, my extended basic is both analog and also SD Clear QAM (And a few local OTA HDTV stations in Clear QAM) so I get 90 some channels of SD so I'm not using the analog tuner on that one either. I used to use the analog section for cable with Beyond TV but it looked like crap on my 24" widescreen but passable on a 15" laptop which is what I streamed to. Problem was Beyond TV is never going to support the 801e's QAM tuner so when I did a fresh install of Vista a couple of months ago I hacked in the TV Pack 2008 along with the Service Packs and with a little work got the tuning tables edited and mapped so they'd work in Media Center. Problem there is Media Center is crippled for streaming live TV and that's probably just Microsoft kissing DRM/Tivo butt again because I can see no reason it shouldn't be quite easily possible.

Setting up the 801e for Clear QAM has been an adventure and it's similar to the manual way you do it in Vista Media Center but someone wrote a little helper program to simplify that and there is none for Media Portal and QAM related setup information is pretty thin. Luckily I picked up enough setting it up for Vista to make it work but it was time consuming manually going through 311 QAM channels, deleting the 200+ that are scrambled and mapping the 99 Clear QAM channels. Now it's finding a decent source for the Program Guide and making sure it's synced up to the right QAM channels and getting it to stream to my laptops and other computers. Then automating everything and set it up for recording 'my shows'.

It takes a little extra work to set up Media Portal but it's because it's not 'dumbed down' or crippled that makes it the best of both world's for me. It streams like Beyond TV and handles Clear QAM and multiplel USB tuners like Media Center. I'm glad I gave it a shot even though neither of my devices are listed as officially supported. If I can get all the little kinks worked out and make it do what I need it to do then I'll definitely through some 'development bucks' their way.

The drivers on that page my not work, I know the 801e drivers won't with Vista Media Center and TV Pack 2008. The best thing to do (and it notes this at the top of the page now which is something new) is to download the new version of PCTV Center that just came out and install it. After you get everything working in Media Portal then you can delete PCTV Center and the drivers will stay. When I set up Vista Media Center with the TV Pack I had to install the beta to find the best drivers and the only ones that would scan the QAM tuner correctly in the 801e. The 800e drivers must have gotten an upgrade too because it never was this stable. A big problem with both of these devices has been BDA drivers that weren't 100% compliant and that was pushed to the back burner during the transition of the line from Pinnacle to Hauppage subsidiary PCTV but seems to have been (Finally!) fixed in the latest drivers in the PCTV Center software.

I don't know if any of the updates help the analog sections of either tuner since I no longer use the analog section of either tuner. The analog tuner sections are always going to be problematic since they don't have a hardware encoder. They were really just thrown in there to get through the 'Digital Transition' here in North America. I'm lucky in that my cable provider has all the extended basic tier analog stations also available in SD Clear QAM. Analog TV is on it's last breath
