Play ftp sourced movies ? (1 Viewer)

Hi, im getting my father a HTPC as a christmas present. My plan was that he would be able to play movies "stream" via the ftp folder video option, but as i noticed when testing this idea is that the movies doesent stream, they just download them via mediaportal. Is there any to watch movies and videos through mediaportal with the files on my computer through the internet ? So that he can simply start mediaportal and watch movies via my computer at home.
Ive tried via ftp server and hamachi but you can still only download the movies and not simply play them...
Anybody have a good solution ?

I haven't tried it yet but there is a UPNP plugin available here. Use that in combination with TVersity. If you do this I recommend putting your server in a DMZ.
