My HTPC has a P4 2.8 which has to run at 1.6GHz (mobile CPU locked at 12x multiplier) and an ATi Radeon 9800 Pro. I want to upgrade it to be able to play HD videos.

At the moment I can play HD DivX/XviD files, but MPEG-2 or anything else struggles to play.

So should I upgrade the CPU, the graphics card or both?

Edit: My TV is 720p, going from DVI -> HDMI.

I like the HD2400 and HD2600 myself, they are cheap and work well with HD playback.
Not good for gaming thow...

So a HD2600 would be better than a 9800 pro? I'm not looking to do any gaming on this computer.

Should I change my socket 478 motherboard or just get a ~3GHz P4?

Well for HD playback and just movies: yes imo.
Dont think that an processor upgrade is very nessecery in your case, P4 2.8 should be fine for a HTPC.
