Please help a noob with my videos and DVD format (1 Viewer)

I'm trying to help a friend with Media portal install and config. He has ripped about 100 DVDs to an external HD using DVD Decryptor using IFO mode.

The format of the files is:

H:\folder\VIDEO_TS\vts_1_0.ifo
H:\folder\VIDEO_TS\vts_0_1.VOB

It appears the IFO mode does not create the necessary VIDEO_TS.IFO file under the VIDEO_TS directory. MP will not play the VOB file without the VIDEO_TS.IFO file. I have a good rip by just copying the files from another DVD with the proper VIDEO_TS.IFO and will play fine.

So my question, is there any way to get this files to play properly or will it require a new rip? What is the best format to use to ensure compatibility?

Have you tried just renaming the .vob files to .mpg ?

If you don't need the menus (just the chapter points) then MakeMKV will rip DVDs to .mkv files with chapters in one step, and 'mkvmerge GUI' - part of MKVtoolnix - will re-mux existing video files to .mkv

You'll need to install the Haali splitter to play .mkv - http://haali.net/mkv/mkx.y.9.exe seems to be the latest version.
