I've submitted a patch to SF this morning that allows you to specify whether the splash screen is shown or not via the command line. The command line switches are:/nosplashor-nosplashIt's up to the devs whether they use this tiny little patch but I believe it solves the problem of too many options being presented to the user, something I agree with MrMario64 on, in addition to agreeing that it is useful to see what is going on.* edit *The patch has been rejected on the basis that the preferred method would be an option within the config app. Bit of a catch 22 thing going on.
