I think the waiting cursor still is hardcoded in most of the plugins... What plugin are you thinking about?

No there is no XML code to set up the 'waiting cursor'. Its on-screen location is hardcoded (i.e. screen center) and not accessible to a plugin.

...well, if you need to code your own plugin and want to bypass the default waiting cursor you can duplicate the code (you cannot inherit this object) and solely use your new hourglass-like object instead.
If you're a skinner then you're right, not much to do about it.

you could try just using pictures with a big transparent background and then set the image somewhere in the edge.
