Practical reasons, I guess. Consider writing a log on a disk while the disk is heavily used (uncompressed recordings). That would disturb either writing the log or the recorded file. Letting it run through RAM you have a buffer. My fli4l router does it the same way, if I'm not wrong. And you can continously check the log even with MP running...J.
