Problems installing Windows Media Portal (1 Viewer)

I have tried to install Windows Media Portal on my XP machine. It comes back with the error

Failed to install application [MS sql express 2005]

I tried uninstalling anything that was installed which had sql in the title from Add and Remove programs and reinstalled, though this didn't help.

Any idea what is going on?

Did you download it first from MS Download details: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition It should prompt you (or at least it did me!) during the install process then you just drop it into the install directory.

I had the same problem and this is what helped me.

According to "summary.txt" in SQL install logs the trouble was related to COM+, which in turn depends on Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator. Installing MSDTC again by typing " %WINDIR%\System32\msdtc.exe -install " in the command prompt solved the problem, the next install went fine.
