Hi everybody

On reading http://wiki.team-mediaportal.com/UserGuides/video, we can see "ATi 7xxx, 8xxx, 9200, 9250 ?GeForce 4 are NOT ?DirectX9 compatible! do not use them with MediaPortal" .... but I'm using my Radeon 7000 on my HTPC with MP about 4 months ago, before reading this page!!! .

Could someone tell me what is supossed to be doing wrong my graphics card?

:D

You can use it, but this will bring you very high CPU uses (80-90%), because the DirectX9 features will be done in Software and not in the Cards Hardware. They might still work, if you have a fast CPU, but slotting in a cheap DX9 card will improve overall performance.

I used a ATI 7500 for a while and it works, depending on the skin I used. When using the MCE-skin, everything worked fine (not very speedy, but fine enough). When I switched to the Razor theme, I couldn't use MP anymore (because it was so slow).

Maybe that phrase must be changed

Well, I'm sure you have reason, mbuzina, but I'm using my Radeon 7000 on a overclocked AMD Thunderbird 800MHz ... Really I must say that navigate on menus is not "running like the wind", but however, I can see any kind of video at 1280x768 without any problem!!. Even NeroDigital (MP4-AVC) with CoreAVC codec.

So, to let more users to try MP, I think that phrase
"... do not use them with MediaPortal"

    must be change to

"Radeon 7000 ..... are not recommended" or "you will get a slow menu navigation experiencie on using ..."

to avoid some people like me do not try to use MP cause his poor graphic card :(

    :D

I guess the phrase "Not Supported" means that it does not work flawless and that you will not get support for questions like: Why are the menus so slow, why can't I use this skin etc.

The only answer to those question is: DX9 is needed. MediaPortal uses DX9 features to display it's UI. A DX9 GFX board does not mean a huge impact on your money-bag anymore, so it is correct to advice people to use a DX9 card. If you ceck the forum, there are quite a few complains about to slow UI, which are all based on "wrong" gfx boards.

can see any kind of video at 1280x768 without any problem!!. Even NeroDigital (MP4-AVC) with CoreAVC codec.

But how about any overlayed window? I guess that is where the fun stops. DX9 is used to mix video with UI elements and that will only work properly with HW acceleration.

But as long as you are happy with slow menues and good TV quality: Hey nobody tells you not do that.

    Perfect and detailed answer

Reading your answer, is clearly why some cards are not "supported", in fact, you related all things that "stops my fun": When windowed TV or video is showed, it's not fluid.

But the reason cause I opened this thread was about in "that" page say "DO NOT USE THEM with MediaPortal".

I think would not be a great effort to change "Do not use them ..." by "They are not supported (or recomended by technical reasons) ...." that will give a opportunity to try MP to people having those graphic cards  . Despite all, in that web page, the word "requirments" should be corrected too ;)

    THANK YOU for your explanations

The Problem is that non DX9 cards crop up time and time again, as "I have a problem only now", which actually back dates to there original install version not being DX9.

Experiement please with any video card you like but for 30-40 Euro's you have quite a choice of different cards, that meet all Mediaportal requirements and make the whole experience more fluid.

Have a look at the posts with people saying about slow channel changes etc, a lot of these relate to DX9 and vmr9 working effortlessly or not together.

Older Proccessors you can get away with, as long as you have no software encoding cards, BUT the DX9 Video card really is a requirement to ensure compatibility with XP which of course MP needs.

I have a Geforce 4 mx 440 and i notice a slow down in audio at one point in Elephants Dream. It is a really complex graphics scene. This card does everything else fine, although there is a Pentium D 2.8 to back it up.
