Hello all! I am using a client/server setup.
In my server I am currently running 8 1TB hard drives in a RAID 5 configuration connected to a Highpoint 2320 raid controller and using a 74GB WD Raptor drive for the OS and it is connected into the MB's built in SATA ports.

My question is, is it better on my server to leave it run all the time or to shut it off every day? I only use it in the evenings most of the time so it wouldn't get used all day long until I get off of work. If I am to leave it on, should I set it to go to sleep or just leave it run as normal? I thought maybe putting it to sleep might cause some trouble when spinning back up 9 hard drives but I wasn't sure :)

Any input would be appreciated :)

Excuse my bad english. I would let it run. In my opinion starting and shutdown is more bad for life time of components as 24hours running.

    btw: Congratulations to 8 1TB HDDs :D

I was sort of thinking the same thing :) Thanks for the input! Any other suggestions or comments on sleep? Like I said I'm a little worried about what sleep mode could do to 9 hard drives.

Edit: Oh and thanks, i'm really enjoying all the space, 6.36TB usable space :)

Of course shutting it down would be better for the planet ...

from your system point of view ==> leave it running 24h/7d

from your wallet and planet point of view => shut it down

i think starting and stopping all drive each day will do more damage than leaving it all day running, however the energy consumption is also important and you can save lots of money by shutdown the system during night and morning.

    its your decision.

my server runs 24/7 but it has only 4 drives. and ive calculated an annual cost of 160 euros of energy for it.

I think I will leave it on for a month or so and see what it does to my utility bill. I can't see it raising it that much but over time it will likely amount to a lot. 160 euros converts to about $216 US Dollars, which is a big chunk of change! Thanks for the suggestions :)

160euros was for the whole year.

but remember that u have more hard drives than me, so add a little more. using the bill its quite difficult as each month you put the AC or the heaters different amount of time depending on weather, as well as other usages.

but it will give u an estimate.

if u have a multimeter, use that to calculate it.

I can't see it being that expensive so I will likely just leave it on 24/7, I'm thinking it will be much better on the drives in the long run :)
