Hello. I just started with MP a few weeks ago and have been going forward and of course a few back steps also.

And I was just wondering if there is some kind of list what decoders MP developers recommend and why?

I mean, they are a few to choose from. :)

after a lot of changes on what codecs i use for the files i need to decode here is what suits me the best.

1) Mpeg2 (DVDs, mpeg2 files, HD files encoded in Mpeg2) i use NVIDIA PureVideo Decoder. Very good especialy with Nvida 6x and 7x series it allows for hardware accelaration which frees up a lot of CPU cycles. Also the PQ and the colors are great. Not free though.

2) MPEG4 (Xvid and divx ripped files) i use ffdshow with a couple of filters enabled for better PQ. FFDSHOW is a software decoder and in order to use filters you will need a good CPU to keep up with the filters enabled. Also there are so many builds of ffdshow out there so you got get a good build. I personaly use this version FFdshow-20060803-rev2546.exe as it works great with the filters that i use.

3) H.264 encoded files (mkv, mp4, ogg i think as well are h264) i use CoreAVC which again its not free but it does a very good job. And Haali Media Splitter which is free. using ffdshow to decode mkv and mp4 files caused me a lot of problems.

4) AC3filter for ac3 sound decode.

Also i will agree to what Paranoid said. A codec that works for me might not nesseraly work for you or for someone else.

Exactly what he said almost! Definitely avoid codec packs unless you have absolutely no idea about codecs and don't care to invest a little time learning...

1) Mpeg2 = NVIDIA PureVideo Decoder. The best out there. Not free.

2) MPEG4 (Xvid and divx ripped files) = DivX 6.2.5 codec. Not free. I used to have ffdshow installed but now there seems to be a million versions out there which are updated daily and sometimes a little unstable... If you kind find a version which works for you stick with it.

3) H.264 = CoreAVC (video) + CoreAAC (sound: aac is the usual format). Not free.

4) AC3 = AC3filter. Free.

Anyone know if the Haali Media Splitter is required with MediaPortal for H.264 content in a .mp4 container?

Thx,
KnightAzul
