Hi,
If you had a look @ the template then you'll see that in "installation folder"\Mediaportal\log you have several logs, like MediaPortal, error, etc which can describe whats causing your problem. You can zip all logs & attach it to your post or upload them to http://pastebin.team-mediaportal.com & link back here in your post.
We also need the system specs to be able to see if we can reproduce or help you with the problem.

@CyberSimian Sorry, I missed your last post. I ended up doing a clean install on the client and all is well now. It still doesn't let me go back in time when I change channels but it does continue operating from that point on. I'm ok with that. Thanks for your help!

When I first start watching a TV program the timeshift functions works perfectly. I can shift back and forth in time and it works...

Can you try excluding the recording folder of all background processes? (f.e. defender/antivirus etc, and maybe (don't know if that is even a thing) from creating thumbnails)
