I wanted to post this here so that it didn't get lost in the thread where it originated. I installed Mediaportal on my work PC to evaluate it, and I ran into the problem described in this thread: https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/unreadable_text-t20835.html?p=139777 (I think unrelated to the text error he also has)

I wasn't able to pin down why this happened, but here is the gist:

1) MediaPortal is installed
2) Settings are modified slightly, just playing around with them
3) Saving the settings fails because an error is displayed: access to the registry is denied.

The workaround: Go into regedit, right click on the key in question, and change the permissions of "Everyone" to "Full Control" instead of just "Read".

The machine was working fine otherwise during this time, and other folks have seen this problem. So I expect something is off on the software side.

:D
