Is there a way to access your home computer, mainly mediaportal from any internet computer
I.e if away from home can use an internet cafe to access your HTPC and set up some recordings or view photos etc

I think there are several ways, I use iPimp which is actually designed to run from iphone, but is also running very smooth fromany webkit browser, like google chrome.
But however,there are other web frontends, just do a small search in the forums...

I use VNC which is a small application that you install on your home PC and then you need to install it on the PC that you want to use to access, so it's not much use for internet cafe's and so on. Another one to look at is UltraVNC which is the same thing, but with some enhancements, generally on how the video signal is sent to the remote controlling computer.

This gives you full access to the machine, and yes, you can control MP with the mouse from here, although sometimes if the connection is not great it can be a pain.

If you don't have public IP addresses, you would need to do some port forwarding on your home router, but there's a very good website that tells you how to do it for nearly all routers if you Google 'Port Forwarding'.

Failing that, there are commercial programs like 'Go to my PC' - not tried it but I think it's like PCAnywhere from yesteryear, again giving you remote access.
