Hi there,

I am currently building a HTPC and I want to activate S3 standby mode from my mce remote.

I followed a guide I found on http://www.videoscreencast.com/Default.aspx?tabid=64

In short
- Connect mce receiver to one of the USB ports on the backplate of the motherboard
- Set acpi suspend mode to S1&S3 in BIOS
- Add the folowing to the registry

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\usb]
"USBBIOSx"=dword:00000000

- run in commandline: dumppo.exe admin minsleep=S3
- Device Manager -> Human Interface Devices -> HID-compliant consumer control device -> power management tab -> check allow this device to bring the computer out of standby. All other devices have the option unchecked.

Remark:
I have some doubts regarding the last step: In Device Manager -> Keyboards all the eHome things show up like Microsoft eHome Remote Control keyboard keys. There is nothing regarding eHome in Human Interface Devices section except for Microsft eHome Infrared Transceiver but this has no "power management" tab.

Observations
- I am able to put the PC in S1 using rhe remote and also wake up.
- When there is no device that has the option "allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" checked, the pc goes in S3 using the remote. Of course I cannot wake up with the remote
- When applying all the above steps, the PC goes for one second in S3 and immediately resumes. Accoring to the guide I followed (see above) I should remove all USB devices except the mce receiver. However , the only usb device connected is the mce receiver!!!

I also see in the Human Interface Devides 5 entries
- HID-compliant consumer control device
- HID-compliant device
- HID-compliant device
- HID-compliant device
- Microsft eHome Infrared Transceiver

=> which is my remote???

Hardware
Mobo: ASUS A8N-E SE
CPU: AMD athlon64 3000+
GPU: ASUS Geforce 6600 Silencer
Remote: Microsft MCE Remote

Does anyone has any ideas as to what the cause can be of this problem and better ... how I can solve it?

If more info is required, just ask

Thx in advance for any help

    Hi Phoeniks

What it does not say on that website, is that only a couple of usb ports are powered in S3.
Try using 0\1 usb ports (may need motherboard manual\search).
    Common problem.

    Hi Delusion,

Thx for your reply and taking time to help me with my problem!!!

I am aware of the fact that not all usb ports are powered in S3. That is why I plugged the mce receiver in one of the usb ports on the backpanel of the motherboard (USB 1). I have read somewhere that this is a good choice. Nevertheless, I checked my manual but I can not determine which USB ports are powered and which are not in S3.

Maybe in my explanation I was not clear enough: My problem is that the PC enters S3 state for one second and immediately resumes afterwards. I notice all the fans stop for a second and then resume spinning. The mce receiver is the only device allowed to resume the PC and I have no other USB devices.

My best guess so far is that it is actually the mce receiver that is resuming the PC since it is the only device that has the option "allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" checked. However, I cannot understand why it does not do that when I configure the PC to enter S1 instead of S3.

    Best Regards

    The available BIOS options are
    - S1 & S3 which is the default
    - S1 (pos)
    - S3 (str)

BIOS is latest. Upgraded recently to fix problem with temperature reporting to OS.

So, I guess you want me to set BIOS to S3 (str) and try again.

Will do that and report back

    Kind regards

I put the ACPI suspend to S3 (str) and booted the PC. Once in windows, I noticed that in the device manager, the power management tab has disappeared from every device.

When I push power button on the remote the PC now goes in S3 but I cannot wake the pc anymore. So, I starting to think about what Delusion wrote about powered USB ports. I went back to the guide and now I saw something about jumpers on the motherboard that need to be set in order to have power to USB ports in order to wake PC. There is a jumper for every 2 USB ports. So, I am gonna check out those jumpers. However, I have no more time today. I will do it tomorrow.

I did everything you have described above and it still didn't solve my problem.

The thing that did the trick for me was to disable "Wake PC on Keyboard/Mouse Press" (Can't remember the exact name of the option).

    Just my 0.02$.

    Cheers,

    Hello again,

I finally had the occasion to test if setting the jumpers did the trick yes or no. Well it did. I am now able to put the pc in S3 and even S4 using the mce remote. Waking up is also no problem anymore.

I had read about the jumpers but I was a bit confused by the fact that the PC immediately resumed after entering S3. I figured I had power on the usb ports since S3 was entered. Guess that windows xp or my motherboard was responsible for the immediate resume.

Thanks everyone for all the help. I am now a step closer to a complete HTPC setup.

    good on you!

    Thankyou!

I have been looking for a solution to this problem for soooo long! I have posted countless messages on countless forums and I have not encountered anyone with similar issues.

I tried what you suggested with the jumper pins with not much hope of success because as you pointed out it doesn't seem like a wake up problem. But, hey presto, it now functions properly.

    Cheers,
    BW

Hi there....have been reading this thread with great interest as I have exactly the same problem.

Could someone please tell me where the jumpers are that have to be set and also what it should be set to. Have looked through the entire ASUS A8N-E manual and website and can find no reference to it anywhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
