Summary:
EPG update from DVB-T stream can cause stuttering. Add feature to enable EPG to be grabbed automatically at a pre-scheduled time.

Description:
Stuttering of the TV picture (and also audio) on lower-spec machines is a significant problem. One of the causes is the grab of the EPG from the DVB-T stream. The problame can be solved by switching off the EPG grab facility, but that leaves us without an EPG.

The requested feature would start up MediaPortal (in the same way it is started to make a recording) at the same user-specified time everyday, grab the EPG from the DVB-T stream, and then close it down again.

Typically, the time for the grab would be set to some time in the night when no one was likely to be using the system.

Outside of the scheduled period, EPG grabbing would be switched off, helping to reduce stuttering.

Many thanks for giving us the opportuinity to request enhancements.

or why not just fix the issue on your system that causes the stutter.. ie poor device drivers, IRQ clashes etc etc.

I think this would be a good feature for the future. At least one use case when this would be useful is that user would be able to schedul nightly EPG updates as it might be possible that MP / computer isn't used for along time and tv engine could run out of EPG data as the PC haven't been on for a week.

Hi Chenks. There's a couple of threads where we're trying to find the causes and fixes for stutter. Here's one. Can you help?

    This is a good idea.

For single core low powered pc's it is a nightmare when the DVB-t EPG grab kicks in on every channel change and when a recording starts.

THE EPG Grab priority seems to be way to high compared to the recording or playback TV priority and as the UK grab can take upto fifteen minutes including the database update (on low powered pc's) this causes stuter and dropped frames through out this time.

Any single core sub XP2000 pc is affected by this.

Dual core or dual cpu pc's aren't affected as the EPG grab is a seperate thread and will then occupy the other cpu without conflicting with TV thread on the other cpu/core.

A dual P3 500 I have runs flawless in this respect, whereas an XP2000 suffers badly.
