So I've been using MediaPortal for quite a while now for videos and such and even got the Yahoo EPG to work with my analog card for a while until Yahoo shut that down. Now I have digital cable available to me and I got excited about getting a digital card so I can use my computer as a DVR and everything so I came here to get a few tips about that.
But I discover that basically there is no way for a digital TV card to display digital cable due to the fact that every cable company I know of scrambles these signals and require you to use their set top box and the best Media Portal can do is maybe control the STB if I get another piece of hardware and cobble together some kind of fix.

Needless to say I was quite disappointed. Am I missing something? If I get a digital TV card and my cable company requires a STB will Mediaportal at least be able to get the program guide from my cable company? I mean, all I really want to do is have the ability to DVR my favorite TV shows! There are currently no working methods for getting an EPG to work with an analog card. I'm just wondering just how this whole thing works!

Is there some FAQ that I've searched for but not found?
Sorry about the frustration in my voice, but man, what a serious disappointment.

This should in no way be taken as some kind of critisism of MP because I still like this program, rather, forgive me for my need to express my displeasure with the nature of things.

Does the setup box use a smart card? Can't you get a CAM like you can with (some) DVB-S services?

Unfortunately not in the US. The only way to get a cable card equipped PC is to buy a prebuilt option with Vista. The hardware has to be licensed as a complete package to have that capability.
