Setup Issues (1 Viewer)

I'm into my second week in trying to setup and use MediaPortal for the first time. Right now I'm trying to setup the EPG so I can record programs. I'm following the Wiki and I've gotten to the middle of Manual Mapping. I've got WEBEPG open, TV MAPPING open, and I get to the paragraph in the Wiki where it says: "To manually assign data sources to a channel, select the channel to configure (I'm OK to there) and click the ...(browse) button behind the Channel textbox on the right side of the window.

I don't see any (browse) button!
I don't see any Channel textbox!

I'm looking at the screen immediately above that text in the Wiki. I'm sure I'm lost somewhere, but I'm trying to follow things to the letter. What am I missing?

I'm using version 1.2.2.

Connected to my Cable TV coax.

As I keep trying to set up WebEPG I find a section in the WIKI that says to replace the webepg-config.exe that comes with MP with a new one. So I try to click on the link provided and keep getting a "404 file not found" error.

Then I do some further searching and get led to a posting on 6/11/2010 by Alank that states: "WebEPG is not for us US Folks"

WELL! I sure wish the WIKI had made that point clearer earlier in the process! I've spent a significant amount of my free time trying to get MP to run for me, and right now it appears I've wasted it all.

I had better luck with the software that came with my TV tuner.

Hi Rich,

I seem to recollect that many US users use a thing called 'schedules direct' - if you use the forum search function it should throw something up. If my memory serves me correctly, this is a $20 per annum service. I'm sorry I can't be of more help with your EPG - I'm in the UK and use a Satellite stream (DVB-S) for populating mine.

Sadly the only good guide for the U.S.A is Schedules Direct as porky said plus its plug-in https://www.team-mediaportal.com/extensions/television/schedulesdirect-guide-importer

Another option for US EPG is MC2XML and it seems to be working fine with the xmltv tv plug in. The only trick is getting it to out put a tvguide.xml as it wants to use a xmltv.xml. A simple .bat file can fix that tho. This is what I use to export a tvguide.xml instaed of xmltv.xml. mc2xml -o tvguide.xml

I should probably warn you that the tv listings in mc2xml are not very detailed and as a rule don't have a ton info for channels and programs. All I really need is the name of the show and a one line description of the episode so I know if I have already seen it or not so it works for me. Schedules direct is a lot more detailed and complete and I'm sure easier to get it going in mp.

The USA EPG is a bit frustrating and a scavenger hunt. You need to look for info in the EPG forums https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/forums/electronic-program-guide.67/ for WebEPG and/or xmltv. I've been able to get 2 options to work. Either option will give a basic EPG with program times, names, and descriptions. I'm using xmltv/mc2xml for EPG.

1. WebEPG using imdb.com. I sent a reply to this thread https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/threads/does-not-find-grabbers-when-mapping.105521/ to get WebEPG working. My reply refers to 1 or 2 other message threads that give info for WebEPG setup.

2. Assuming you have windows Vista or Win7 with MSFT MediaCenter setup to download EPG info you can use the xmltv plugin and mc2xml. To get mc2xml go to the following and download mc2xml.exe.http://mc2xml.awardspace.info/ You also need to download the xmltv.dtd file at http://xmltv.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/xmltv/xmltv/xmltv.dtd be sure you save it as a .dtd file and have a copy in the folder you use for the tvguide.xml file.The mc2xml web page has setup info for MediaPortal. One more comment, after you enable either the WebEPG or xmltv plugin I think you may need to use the use the TV Server Control program, Manual Control to stop and start the TV service. The TV Server tv.log file should show that the plugin is started.
