Is there support for a shared (networked) installation of Media portal.
or is it a change of xml file to do it ?

If I upgrade my share (\\server\MediaPortal\ ** )
Can I create a short cut to that place ?
OR if I make 5 separate installs can I use the same database for pics, mp3, movies, skins and plugins ?

Im running StreamedMP with TV series and Moving Pictures.

---

I have too many computers at home

HTPC
My laptop
My GF laptop
My gaming rig
My server (here I want to install it)

TIA - :D

As it stands, only TV is client/server. It would be too much work to make all the other data available over the network, but I suspect it is something we will see in MP2.

I am using shared database, thumbs and skin locations for my 2 PC's. That includes my MovingPictures and TVSeries databases. Of course the shares should be created with UNC network paths and the key is that you should NEVER try to update simultaneously from both.
Although not officially supported, the instructions are in the manual.

how is your performance compared to local installation?
And how do you make sure, you don't get concurrent accesses from multiple clients?
(Asking because I did this type of install some time ago and had massive degration in performance)
    tnx, Guzzi

Performance is very good. My bedroom PC is very old so expected to be a bit slower, but very acceptable.
My problems a year or so ago was my wireless lan. Chucked it in favour of a gigabit wired lan, and never looked back.

Bedroom PC is off most of the time, except of course for.....bedtime :D
Guess that's why I have never been bothered by concurrent updates.

I would not want to exchange this shared setup for anything less. Even my skin folder is shared. That way, my changed menu (StreamedMP basichome) is also exactly the same on both. With minimum effort.

I was even thinking to experiment on sharing the plugin folders, but have not yet had time for that.

Update just in case anyone wants to try it.
I finally tried it, but could not get it to work.

Guess they are serious with the "Don't modify" part in mediaportaldirs.xml :D

Hmmm, I have only 100 MBit network and no easy way to change that - and I encountered a severe loss in usability that time, when accessing bigger DBs.
I am looking for exactly what you described: I want to change once (including skin mods etc.) and have it availyble on all machines ... Maybe there changed things in the handling - when I find the time I might give it another try...
