Hi all,

I recently purchased a NAS device which I thought would give me a little more flexibility in addition to my needs for extra storage, rather than just purchase a larger drive.

As this could turn out to be lengthy, I would just summarise what you are letting yourself in for if you are to read on, which is that I am having problems setting up shares that I can record to using my combination of for the record, windows 7, and a netgear stora.

OK.. if you are still here, I will first of all acknowledge that my problems could pertain to any of the components I listed, and in actual fact are least likely to be mediaportal related (in a direct sense), but I am asking in the other appropriatte places too.

Essentially I have been running mediaportal for probably a couple of years now, and always have recoded locally, so whilst I have had the smallest sprinkling of network shares exposure, it resally has been at an almost superficial level as to be effectively non exsitent.

With the Stora running I am able to browse to the desired folders for recording withing TVServer Configuration, and select the stora folders. Furthermore, when checking the UNC paths in the For the Record plugin (still within TV Server Config) it has correctly identified the path by name (//STORA/MyVideo.. etc) as opposed to the browsed path used to select the folder in the first place.... so it seems like everything is correctly connected. However, in "for the Record" if I test the shares I get "not OK'.. and of course, any attempted recording duly fails.

I have read and read and am just getting more confused. For example I can access the Stora folders through explorer. Upload and download files to the NAS, and even map the drives. But the Stora never appears on the "network map", and if I select the properties of any of the network forlders (default, or user created) I do not get the option (tab) to update the sharing properties that I would normally get on my lcal folders.

I have changed the log on settings in TV Server and For theRecord Services to use an Administrator log on instead of System, as I understand that default "system" setting does not allow use of network shares.

I have tried the computer in various network profiles (public, work, home), fiddled with the firewall, rummages through the router, poured over the ports.... nothing.

Now... Im going to pre-empt you saying "so why all the fuss" as ultimately I can probably live without recording directly to the drive given that I have two 1TB drives in my media pc already, and I could easily copy the files to the (larger) server, and just continue to record to the local drives. (This assumes that I will have no trouble "playing" files from my Stora, through mediaportal, which I am yet to confirm, but am - for some unknown reason - more confident about. However, I would really like the option to record to wherever I want, if it should, in theory, be possible.

I was aware, when I purchased the Stora, that it was limited compared to other NAS solutions, however I read (both prior to, and since my purchase) of these being used in similar applications, but just not with any explanation if there were problems doing so.

As I say, I appreciatte this is really only a mediaportal 'linked' issue, not a mediaportal issue per se BUT I am hopeful that someone out there may be able to point me toward some form of a solution.

Thanks in advance......

Ohl.. and the best of the season ;)

Hi CairnsFella!

it has correctly identified the path by name (//STORA/MyVideo.. etc)

Sounds indeed not like a MP problem, but anyways... ;)
Try to map the network share to a drive: open Explorer -> Tools -> Map Network Drive and select one of the drive letters at the end of the alphabet.
Done this, try to copy a file via Explorer to the NAS. Does this work? If not, you need to adjust your NAS' settings to allow writing access to the share.

hth.

Cheers,
quimby.

The network map is an MS thing and even XP machines will not show up on this. The sharing and config options are on the server side (STORA) rather than your local machine so again you will not see a sharing tab.

Make sure that everything is setup to use the same workgroup and everything is on the same IP range (eg. most home devices will be 192.168.1.x with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0)

The odd thing is though, if you can access the shares through explorer(presumably
    \\Stora\MyVideos
and read / write then I don't see why MP would have issues.

It has been ages since I tried out 4TR but is the check there not actually checking that that local folder is shared? (I am not sure how well 4TR copes with recording over a network)

Are you able to get music /videos working over the network first to narrow down any issues?

As you have set the TVService to run under Administrator could you check that the Administrator can sucessfully see the share you want to save recordings too? (Log on as Administrator and run the configuration). Then map the drive while logged in as administrator (I'm not sure this will work for but it's the best bet if you can't see the NAS while browsing in Explorer). I had a similar issue with an NSLU2 NAS but a firmware upgrade solved the visibility problem.

Whether you can see the share via the MS network map is controlled by the NAS box (mine allows it to be set per share), so you'll need to check the configuration there to see if it can be done on the Stora (P19 in the Sept 2009 Stora manual) - the configuration tool for TV requires you to find a path in explorer rather than just enter it.

    Hope this helps.
