Hi,

I am experiencing smeary playback of SD sources and think it is probably down to my ATI card, I have an old MCE machine using MCE 2005 and that plays SD and video back no problem.

I have tried all the codecs list in MP and also fiddled with the deinterlace settings but faces seem to wobble and static items wobble also, I have tried it connected with HDMI and RGB the refresh rate is set to 50hz, it seems worst when the display is set at 60hz.

I have Catalyst 9.8 drivers on the system, the graphics card is a sapphire 3450.

HD seems to play back fine.

Any suggestions, I had this with Vista MCE but it seemed to go away.

Rest of the system specs are:-

MOBO: Gigabyte MA770-UD3
CPU: Amd 5400+
RAM: 2GB
HD: 750GB WD
GPU: Sapphire 3450
LG Bluray drive

Codecs are FFD show, arcsoft and MCE and MKV Splitter.

ANy suggetions on how to improve this will be appreciated.

Exactly what are the sources you are referring to? TV or video file? Can you use media info to provide some more detail on the sources?

    What exactly does "smeary" mean?

The 3450 is a bit underpowered. Try pressing SHIFT-1 while you are watching and see if there are any dropped frames / jitter.

    Thanks for the reply.

Sources can be recording from media portal and sometimes DVD, the recordings are UK DVB-T recordings, some recording are worst than others.

It is most noticeable on still faces where the features seem to wobble from side to side when the face is static.

I understand the graphics card is by no means high powered but it plays hi-def with no issues at 720P, I am happy to upgrade this and would be interested as to what you think would be a better choice.

I have a feeling I had this issue with the ATI drivers with Vista MCE and seem to remember hacking something in the registry to fix it (seem to remember it was interlacing).

I will try Shift+1 but am pretty sure no frames are being dropped.

    Ah ha just found this

Tried the changes in the article and it has fixed the issue, playback is now much better.
