Hi, I'd like to ask a few questions about Media Portal before I download and install it...

I'm looking to setup a "media center/portal" machine to watch live TV, films and various TV series. I need to add that I do not download my content, nor do I have any interest in burning DVD's. I am only interested to find the "best" and "easiest" way to rip my DVD's (and eventually Blu-rays) to HDD in whatever format (I don't care) to be able to view them in a well structured media program.

Currently, I have been messing around with dvdshrink, which works fine to rip to HDD and also MakeMKV (also works well), does Media Portal support MKV files? Out of the box, WMC doesn't seem to.

- What does the "main menu" structure look like for Media Portal, at first glace I didn't notice any section on the site that showed it!? I probably overlooked it...

- What is the best folder structure for TV series? I would LOVE an option in the main menu that was some like this, "Series". Then within this section each series would only be listed once by it's name, ie. "Dr Who", "Battlestar Galactica", "Scrubs", etc. Then within those would be "Season 1", "Season 2", etc. then finally a list of each episode from that season. Can Media Portal do this out of the box? How should the folder structure look?

- When ripping the TV shows from DVD (or Blu-ray) is there any particular format that I should use for best results? ps. I don't care about the menus or extra content, I just want to build a library in a structure as mentioned above.

- As for films, I assume I can simply place the VOB files into a directory (using the films name) to build up the film library!? How do the title image files work for the films? Does Media Portal try to automatically find and add a title image? What if I don't like the image it chooses, can I replace it?

:sorry: for all the "beginner" questions and :D for any and all responses...

    Hi munyul

    Welcome to the forum. :)

The -->wiki<-- is the best place to find out about the basics of MediaPortal.

Regarding all the movie/video and folder structure stuff: I think you should take a look at the TVSeries plugin. I've never used it, but I'm pretty sure it should be able to support the folder structure that you mentioned.

MKV? I'm not sure that I can answer that question adequately so I'm going to leave it for someone else.

    Hi there and welcome :)

does Media Portal support MKV files?
    I have lots of mkv's supported out-of-the-box.
Well, to be honsest, as you probably know, mkv is just a container and it may contain video's of different codecs. As long as your system support the codec, MP will play it. Personally I use ffdshow and all my codecs are supported.

What does the "main menu" structure look like for Media Portal, at first glace I didn't notice any section on the site that showed it!?

Thanks for the quick replies you two...

MediaPortal seems to have a lot of potential, but at first glance I'm disappointed with the GUI. I'll keep messing with it and maybe some design decission, that seem wierd now, may become clear later on...

On the subject of "design decissions", is there a suggestions box somewhere to post future ideas?
