I have taken the plunge a week or two back and moved the TVserver to the media server PC in the attick (TVserver version 1.0). I now have also updated the MPclient in the living to MP 1.0 on a fresh XP pro SP3 install. I consider this is a considerable step towards the ideal media center set-up, BUT:

I'm left over with a very nasty problem...

When I start TV, stop it and start it again there is only sound, no image. A simple restart of the MPclient (application not computer) solves the issue. This is 100% repeatable.

The MPclient version 1.0.0.0 RC3 that I still have on my office machine and which uses the same TVserver does not show this behaviour.

    Logs attched.

Please help me demonstrate to my family that all the time I spend installing, updating, configuring and debugging MP actually improves the system rather than just introduces new issues :(

    some detail

Without understanding much I went through the Mediaportal log to find the difference between the first time and the second time the TV started. The relevant lines from the log are below. Maybe this may help some-one that does understand quickly identify the issue. There seems to be a problem with VMR pins not being connected.

    From the first succesfull start:

Since this relates to VMR9 I decided to try EVR instead, Eureka the problem is solved. UNFORTUNATELY, now I have a similar problem with video playback. When I stop a video (video_ts playback from HDD) the whole PC crashes. This is repeatable, this does not happen with VMR. I guess the warning about EVR on XP is there for a reason.

    PS
So the solution is: 'when wanting to watch TV, exit MP, start configuration, select EVR, exit, start MP. When wanting to watch a DVD, exit MP, start configuration, select VMR9, exit, start MP'. Doesn't quite beat 'press the play button on the DVD player ...'. Problably won't get away with this with my family. Still looking for a solution.

    PPS
If I wanted this attached to the previous mail, I would edit that one. I don't think this automerge serves the legibilty of a post.

Yesterday I sat down to try to fix this issue. I was ready to do a clean install of XP and MP thinking it had to do with the windows installation.

To my surprise, the problem was gone . I can't figure out what happened during the week. My wife and kids used the system, but they rarely fix something ;). Only thing I can think of is the usual MS updates.

    Anyway, it works :D

    NOT FIXED

This is the worst. The problem went away on it's own and came back on it's own. Where do I start looking?

This problem makes watching TV impossible. The family is threating to send me and 'my' MP into exile ...

After seeing this problem come back and go away, I now believe it relates to hibernation.

The power scheduler was set to make the machine go into hibernation. When the computer comes out of hybernation all seems to work but this problem occurs.

When the computer is restarted the problem does not occur.

So for now it will have to be either shutdown or suspend, but not hibernate. Pity.
