During the MediaPortal setup, it tells me that Microsoft SQL Server 2005 is disabled, but that it will install MySQL 5. When the "Setup database connection" window appears, I can try either of the options with the suggested password ("MediaPortal") but neither will work. When I test the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 option I first get this:

Code:
---------------------------
Error
---------------------------
Connection error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

and when I click "OK", I get the same error in a different message box. Clicking "OK" on that window brings me back to the database setup window with the Hostname and Dependency fields colored red.

When I test MySQL 5, the Dependency field turns green. Then I get this message along with the Hostname field turning red:

Code:
---------------------------

---------------------------
Connection failed!
Unable to connect to any of the specified MySQL hosts.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

In addition to that, the link at the top of the database setup window leads here, which gives me a very useful "You are not allowed to view this page.".

Any help would be highly appreciated as I've just about had it with Windows Media Center :). Thanks in advance!

I'd love to post a log, but after launching the Debugger and hitting Proceed, it throws an Unhandled exception for a missing file (C:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\MediaPortal.xml). Details here:

No, the error is from the Debugger, it pops up after I click Proceed in the Debugger to try and generate that log for you.

What I mean is that is doesn't make sense that mediaportal.xml is accessed by DB form or Tv-Server in general.

It's not, it's accessed by the Debugger. The error happens during the loading of the debugger, before I access the DB connection screen or the TV Server in general.

Anyway, any idea on how I fix the issue with the Debugger or the issue with the DB connection?

Huh? I'm not sure I understand what you mean by that. If you mean the MySQL Server Instance Configuration Wizard, I don't have any experience using that.
