Strange DVD Navigator behavior (1 Viewer)

When I try to navigate within a DVD using the internal MP player the highlighted items always wants to return to the middle selection.
For instance if I have choices vertically of 1 2 3 4 5. It starts out having 3 highlighted and when I move the cursor it always wants to return to 3.
I have tried everything I can think of. Changed video codecs. Changed DVD Navigator.
I use a Harmony 880 remote emulating a MCE remote with a MS MCE remote IR receiver.

What makes this different from the others I have seen in the past with this issue is that if I manually start MP it works normally.
However if I check off "auto start MP with windows" in the general tab this happens every time.
I have also tried unchecking auto start and placing a shortcut in startup.
In addition I tried using the delay feature and set it as high as 30 seconds.
I have tried re-installing with no success. It started with 1.0 and has continued through the last two SVN's.

What I am hoping is that some process is slow to start and somebody here maybe able to help me figure out how to change the start up order in Vista 32.

I would gladly upload logs, but I don't know where they reside and at this moment I need to get to bed.

Thanks,
Mark

I hope someone can help. I did a complete fresh install and still the same exact issue.
If I auto start MP the DVD Navigator does not work correctly.
If I manually start MP it works fine.

I almost forgot this also only happens when I use EVR. However I have other issues that are even more annoying without it.

What do auto start and EVR have together that neither alone does?

I am about at my wits end. I did a complete re-install of 1.0 and still the same thing.
If I auto start MP dvd navigator screws up. If I manually start it it's fine.
I have attached the log files this time and hope somebody can see something.
I have had this problem now from 1.0 to the 3-22 SVN.
This was not at my normal resolution (1080P) or using my normal skin (Monochrome).
I wanted to try it at a very basic level and see what happened.

Have you tried starting MP via a batch file in the startup folder with a delay ? - this should mimic a delayed manual startup.

e.g. for Vista, the batch file commands might be (for a 30 second delay):

    choice /T 30 /D y > nul
    MediaPortal.exe

(The switch "/T n" specifies a wait period of n seconds. The switch "/D y" creates a default choice of "yes". The unwanted text output of the command is redirected to the null device (nul).)

I sometimes get problems with DVD menu navigation too (Vista32+EVR+MS DVD Navigator+PDVD7 codec - the best combination of filters I can find) and I always start MP manually.....

2009-03-26 18:55:16.565966 [Info.][MPMain]: Could not open directory 'F:\'. Error: The device is not ready.

    No clue why it happens.

I don't know about this error, I did see it in the log. I think I may have been a bit fast to the punch on hitting the remote a couple of extra times, a little impatience on my part there.
This was the first and only time that error happened.

I will try the delay idea. I did try starting MP with the startup folder, but without the delay. I also already tried the built in delay setting inside MP, but it probably works a bit differently then an exterior delay.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Your not going to believe this, but even with the bat file starting MP with the 30 second delay the same thing happens.
I am completely wiping the drive again all the way way down. I will re-install Vista with only the bare essentials and then the same with MP.
I will test it and if it works install 1 piece of software at a time and test after each. Maybe I can find a problem with an unrelated piece of software that causes this. I am about to throw the computer out the window.

    Hi, Mark

I struggled for a long time with the same problem, but found in the end a working solution (Vista+EVR). Initially I used the Vista Microsoft codec for DVD, and the DVD Navigator. This did not work well, and I encountered this problem for around 50% of the DVDs I played. My solution was to use PDVD7 codecs and Navigator. This solved the funny menu behaviour for me. My rationale for using PDVD7 is that MP1.0 does not work with PDVD8 Navigator, and PDVD8 codecs only gave the same problem.

I now have another problem using PDVD7, which is that I cannot change subtitles and language while watching a movie, but I guess this is the subject for another thread :)

I also use Harmony 880 (simulating the iMon remote) and Monochrome skin.

    Hope this helps.

Quick question - Do you use the PDVD7 video and audio codecs + navigator or just the video codec and navigator (with a different audio codec) ?

    Thanks,

    Tony

    PDVD7.3 Navigator, video and audio.

I'm still not sure this works perfectly in terms of picture quality, but it fixes the funny navigator issue for me.
