It took me several hours to find out how to install MediaPortal, so here goes a short guide, that should be the first thing one finds on the download page:

------------------------------------------------

MediaPortal consists of two parts:
The part recording TV shows - called backend/TVengine/TVserver (with the TVcard)
The part that plays the recorded TV shows - called the client (preferably connected to a TV)

The easiest is to have both parts on the same computer - all-in-one (skip to Install MediaPortal 1 all-in-one)

If you have an always-on computer that you want to use for recording shows, and one or more other computers you want to use only for playing the recorded TV shows, then you need to install both the MediaPortal 1 and the TVengine - split up in two

--------------------------------------------------

Install MediaPortal 1 all-in-one
WinXP patches - KB941568 & KB919071
Codec patches - K-Lite Codec Pack Full
optional Codec - QTlite, RealAlternative, from Free-Codecs.com
optional driver - MS eHome generic remote driver KB912024
.NET 2 .NET 2.0 SP1
MediaPortal 1 0.2.3.0 final MediaPortal Downloads
Now you should be good to go :)

--------------------------------------------------

Install MediaPortal 1 split up in two

Backend/server:
.NET 2 .NET 2.0 SP1
mySQL or MS SQL (express or better) more info here TV-Engine 0.3 - MediaPortal Wiki Documentation in chapter 2
TVEngine3 (run setup and select server only) MediaPortal Downloads ((use latest nightly build as there is no stabel version just now))

Frontend/client:
WinXP patches - KB941568 & KB919071
Codec patches - K-Lite Codec Pack Full
optional Codec - QTlite, RealAlternative, from Free-Codecs.com
optional driver - MS eHome generic remote driver KB912024
.NET 2 .NET 2.0 SP1
MediaPortal 1 0.2.3.0 final MediaPortal Downloads
And then Visual C++ 2005 SP1 (even though MediaPortal 1 also installed C++)
TVEngine3 (run setup and select client only) MediaPortal Downloads ((use latest nightly build as there is no stabel version just now))
------------------------------------------------

Please Note that you can also run the TVServer on the same machine as the MediaPortal if you want the extra functionality available from it. See a list here TV-Engine 0.3/overview - MediaPortal Wiki Documentation
for the differences between the 2 version of the TV Engines.

Note TVE2 is installed with MediaPortal, but TV Server (aka TVE3) is a separate install which will replace the TVE2 process.

As for the documentation on the wiki, We are trying to make the installation doc's as simple and step-by-step as possible so no one gets confused but it appears you are still having problems. Why did you find it so hard to find the information. Some further explanation would be great so others can benefit if reorganization of the wiki is required for ease of use.

Programming for the sake of programming

I have had many comments to my suggestion for a more understandable guide.
All of the comments has been CMA's.

Nobody seem to care that the MediaPortal is practically impossible to install for outsiders.

That's why the new installer that MP1 has, does everything for you.

Everyone is trying to get rid of the goobleygook, so we all will benefit from clear instructions.

TVServer will now only be called that, rather than all the other little TVE3\backend comments, to further avoid confusion.

Will the new installer check Windows system files for versions that are known to have issues?

it checks OS, downloads and installs requirements for TVServer\MP, depending on your answer to simple questions during the actual install procedure, much like the way Vista does.

was there anything specific you were thinking of as in system files.

"PsisDecd.dll" version is detected by TV3 and not during installation. It's needed only on some systems so if the pre-requistes are found and not the versioned dll, you will receive a popup.
