Thumbnail creation not working (1 Viewer)

When i try to create thumbnails for my pictures (including subfolders) there is no progress bar and also i can't cancel the process so MP hangs and i must kill the task...

MP does all thumb generation on it's own. If there were no thumbs AND you started it for whatever reason maybe this is why it hung.

But this is a bug, or at least a bad behaviour from the point of view of the novice user. Imagine, you have just installed MP, you go to My pictures, select (F9) options menu and create thumbnails... and mp just hangs and also, the progress bar is not moving... so

1) why i can't cancel the process?

2) if there is that option, why i can't use it?

3) why the progress bar doesn't move?

1. because it is done in the background (afaik)
2. I think the only purpose of this option is to re-create all thumbs after you changed the quality setting but I've not added that..
3. This is another bug - there shouldn't be any progress bar - I'll have to look at the code what happens there.

If it's done in the background, this option should be removed or at least fixed. If the purpose is to re-create thumbnails it should be renamed to 'Re-create thumbnails' or something like that. If the process can't be cancelled once it's started why there is that option in the dialog? so, the dialog show a progress bar and an option to cancel... but they both doesn't work...

it could be nice if someone could revise that... regards

i'm doing more tests and i've found that My pictures has many bugs. creating thumbnails (the process is started when i open a new folder with no thumbs created) almost hangs the computer and is eating a lot of resources (is not a background process as you have said) also, after some time browsing folders and sorting items, etc... mp main interface begins to flicker... i've attached logs when this happens.

I suggest you to install MP from scratch and test My pictures from the point of view of end user, you will find that its very unstable....

Since it is serveral months ago since I last looked at the MyPicture changes it would be nice if you could give a rough hint about which SVN worked okay. I'll investigate the background creation at first.

Sorry RTV but i've posted about issues with My pictures many times. Take a look at the forum for RC1 bugs, i've posted there some bugs related to this issue and others in My pictures, but i got no helpful responses. I'm doing my best to report here bugs that i've found.

Also, i'm wondering if i'm the only user using My pictures.... or may be that it's too hard to post bugs here. As other user proposed a few months ago, i also think that MP needs a better bug tracking system, but it's only my modest opinion. I'm sure that all programmers here are doing a hard work to enhace mp... but may be, that they all are 'pushing the door in a wrong direction'.

Most of the thumbnail-related problems should be fixed now.

I've just commited code that:
- improves the responsiveness of MP while building thumbs making MP at least usable again
- added background creation for folder thumbs (if not pin-protected ;-) ) Now _really_ everything is handled by MP itself
- removed superfluous "create thumbs" entries. Only complete regeneration of thumbs in the highlighted subdir has been left (if you e.g. restructured the folders or changed Thumb quality).

If this "regeneration" aka complete rebuild of thumbs is not translated very well please make suggestions and I'll update the language files accordingly.

well i'm using spanish language in mp, so i don't know if i can help with translation if the changes that you've done are in english language. ... other than this, i'm impatient for testing your changes... thanks for trying to help

i've just tested the new SVN and i'm afraid that it works even worse than before, sorry. Now it takes a lot of time to open My pictures (about 10 or more seconds) when finally i entered into my folders to browse the pictures, i've noticed that thumbnails are being generated.. but i've tried to open a picture meanwhile and then, when trying to close it it takes around 15 seconds to close.

may be that you must lower the thumbs creationg process priority...
