I am writing an article for a British computer magazine on building a media PC and am very impressed by the features shown on your website.

However, when I downloaded a copy and attempted to play a WMV file the system stopped responding and I had to restart. When the system went back into windows it instantly crashed and restarted itself. Tried several times and looked worrying. Finally managed to get it running using the "use last known good configuration" on the boot menu. I then uninstalled the software and restarted, no problem.

I then installed the software again tried the same thing, playing a WMV file. The system locked up again and restarted itself only this time instead of crashing immediately on re-entry into windows i got the blue screen of death and then restarted. The next restart I let the scan disk run and it found an error in pagefile.sys and corrected it. On sucessfully re-entering windows the web report for the error was:

STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER

My conundrum is that I want to recommend this software as the best, as according to the features and forums it:

Provides PVR, EPG etc
Works with dual DVB-T tuners (eg Pinnacle PCTV Dual DVB-T Pro PCI’ )
Records in DivX
Plays all formats including .mov and .rm files

Which puts it above the rest as most fail in at least one of those. However, I am rather concerned to reccomend it to thousands of readers when it crashes my whole system nearly unrecoverably. I suspect this is either a feak configuration thing or something solvable as I could find no such other serious errors on the forum.

Any help would be much appreciated

Many thanks

John

System: WinXP SP2, XP2500, 512mb DDR, Inno3D Geforce 6200 256mb.

definately DOESN'T look like MP is related - having this background you probably (should) know this

Have you tried the same WMV using different players?
    Using different CODEC's in MP?

(although I think it is not related to WMV in any way - maybe has to do with your gfx card)

Tried a .MOV file which worked and a .AVI file which worked. I have been testing different media centres for days and playing every format under the sun. As far as this not being related to MP it is a matter of narrowing it down.

WMV in 5 other players = fine
WMV in mediaportal = total crash

That kind of narrows it down.

I suspect it could be a compatability issue with the graphics card given the strange errors. Especially if no-one else has had them.

given the apparent randomness of the error. I think I will omit it from the article.

Thanks for your help guys. Will try different driver combinations when I have got my partitions set up for a quick ghost back to health if all goes awry.

So what VGA and drivers are you using?

    Which CODECs set?

    Gaphics card: Inno3D Geforce 6200 256mb
    Driver: 8.4.2.6
The codec for the movie player is listed as MPV decoder filter.
    WMP11 installed too.
